Gerald R. Ford

Long before he became so important to U.S. history, back when our company was just a start-up, Gerald R. Ford was our Congressman, our neighbor, and our friend.

We remember him coming out to Ada to turn a shovel at groundbreakings. Accepting a glass of orange Active-8, fresh from an industrial mixer, and clinking cups with Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos, our fathers and co-founders. And, on his last visit, telling stories at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel about how he used to court his wife, Betty, in the ballroom that now bears their names.

But most of all, we remember vividly the stories of our dads stopping in to visit President Ford in the Oval Office now and then, just to catch him up on news from home.

Fifteen minutes of Grand Rapids gossip. A brief break from the pressures of the biggest job in the world. Fifteen minutes, maybe, for three guys from West Michigan who knew each other back when to be a little amazed at how the world can call on any of us to serve, and serve well.

We are proud to have known Gerald Ford. He represented every good thing we know about honor, principle, and America.

Caught this on a random blog search and wanted to say what a nice simple tribute that is to a great and misunderstood President. Nice to see this little rememberence and interesting to hear your perspective.

    Thanks,
