NHL Power Rankings

NHL Power Rankings - The Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche each ended last week on a long winning streak, moving them both into a position to challenge for one of the top spots in future editions of the NHL Power Rankings. Moving up to No. 1 this week, however, are the Detroit Red Wings, who defeated last week's leader (the Philadelphia Flyers) in a head-to-head matchup on Thursday night to reach the summit.

Here is the Week 16 edition of the NHL Power Rankings.

01 - Detroit Red Wings (Last Week 02) - Scored five third-period goals against the Flyers on Thursday night; four points for Henrik Zetterberg in that win.

02 - Carolina Hurricanes (Last Week 03) - Have the largest division lead of any first-place team, but will be tested as they suffer through injuries on defense.

03 - Philadelphia Flyers (Last Week 01) - Don't seem to want to give a start to Jamie Storr, so it might be all Antero Niittymaki until Robert Esche returns. More NHL Power Rankings...

Toms Wins Sony Open

David Toms

A final-round 65 gave Toms a 19-under 261 total and allowed him to pull away from Chad Campbell and Rory Sabbatini for a five-shot victory in the first full-field event of 2006 on the PGA Tour.

Toms holed a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 3, twice made good par saves, then closed out his front nine with a five-wood just short of the par-5 ninth for a four-shot lead. The only drama was the margin of Toms' victory, and whether he would finish his final 2½ rounds without a bogey. That string ran out at No. 13 when Toms missed a five-foot par putt, ending a streak of 41 holes at par or better, and the first 5 on his scorecard over the same stretch. It was his 12th career victory, and it should be enough to put him back in the top 10 of the World Golf Rankings.

AFC Conference Championship - Denver, CO - Invesco Field Mile High
Steelers vs Broncos
Sunday, January 22, 2006
3:00 pm EST

AFC Conference Championship Wagering - Pittsburgh Steelers @ Denver Broncos - The Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers will play on Sunday for a spot in Super Bowl XL. And even if it's not the game many expected, the Broncos and Steelers aren't apologizing for postponing a rematch between the Patriots and Colts. After cruising through the regular season with 13 wins and an unblemished record at home in Denver's thin air, the Broncos have the profile of a Super Bowl favorite, while the Steelers are riding a Blitzburgh defensive unit and hoping "The Bus" can get the wheels moving to the Super Bowl for one last run. NFC Conference Championship - Seattle, WA - Qwest Field
Panthers vs Seahawks
Sunday, January 22, 2006
6:30 pm EST

NFC Conference Championship - Carolina Panthers @ Seattle Seahawks - The Carolina Panthers and Seattle Seahawks took different routes to get here, but the two teams share the same stretch of road for the final leg of the journey to Super Bowl XL in Detroit. A preseason favorite in the NFC, the Panthers stumbled out of the gate before winning 12 of their final 15 games. The Seahawks took a little longer to live up to expectations, racing through a 13-3 regular season after disappointing many last season. Riding the legs of NFL MVP Shaun Alexander, the Seahawks played perfect football at home, finishing the season with an 8-0 record. More NFC Championship Preview...
