North Carolina Wins The NCAA Tournament

Tar Heels Win The Tournament

The monkey is finally off Roy Williams' back as North Carolina beat Illinois 75-70, despite blowing a 15-point second-half lead, for its first national championship since 1993 and his first in five Final Four trips as a head coach. This must be bittersweet for Roy Williams but it didn't come easy. Sean May dominated the inside, scoring 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting, and grabbing nine rebounds. The third time was the charm for Roy Williams, and after everyone in Kansas tonight says "crap" he'll be the last one smiling. Way to go Roy! I'm happy for ya.

Terrell To The Patriots
The New England Patriots have reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with free agent wide receiver David Terrell. The deal will reunite Terrell with quarterback Tom Brady. The two played together at the University of Michigan. Terrell was released by the Chicago Bears in February after four inconsistent years in the Windy City. Terrell, who had one year remaining on his contract, was selected eighth overall in 2001. In 52 career games, he had 128 receptions for 1,602 yards and nine touchdowns.
Terrell Last season, Terrell finished with 42 catches for 699 yards and one TD. Those of us that are big into fantasy football really are throwing our arms up in the air at this one. Who knows what will come of it. I actually took Terrell in a mid round in one pool last year. This could realy end up benefiting him. We'll find out in September.

Kevin Harvick captured the Sharpie Professional 250 Busch race at the Bristol Motor Speedway on Monday. The No.29 Richard Childress Racing driver crossed the finish line 0.159 seconds ahead of teammate Jeff Burton.

The victory was Harvick's first of the season and 14th of his Busch career. Reed Sorenson, Matt Kenseth and Sterling Marlin completed the top-five. Harvick broke a 55-race NASCAR winless streak Sunday in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The race had originally been scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but an all-day rain storm postponed the event until 10:45 this morning.

McCarron on top at BellSouth Classic
Tuning up for his Masters defence, Phil Mickelson shot a 7-under 65 on Sunday to move within a stroke of leader Scott McCarron with one round to play in the rain-delayed BellSouth Classic.

McCarron, the 1997 and 2001 winner at the TPC at Sugarloaf, shot his second straight 69 for a 6-under 138 total on the Greg Norman-designed course.

Mickelson, the No. 4 player in the world and the tour's leading money winner, had the best round of the tournament as conditions improved. He holed a 26-yard pitch for eagle on the 310-yard, par-4 13th, and had six birdies and a bogey in the round.

Check back all this week for Masters updates.

NL West Preview

Diamondbacks - Outlook for 2005: Things couldn't have gone any worse for the Diamondbacks in 2004. They lost 111 games and had an unhappy star pitcher. How things can change in one off-season. The Diamondbacks look almost like a brand new team. Randy Johnson was finally shipped to the Yankees for Javier Vazquez, and the team signed Russ Ortiz to long-term deal. To improve their offence, the D-backs added Shawn Green from the Dodgers and Troy Glaus via free agency. With Luis Gonzalez back from surgery, the 'Three G's' could provide some problems for opposing pitchers. The D-backs have weaknesses though. Their closing situation is up in the air, and there are questions about Troy Glaus' ability to stay healthy. While they'll be better than 2004, the 2005 Diamondbacks will need almost everything to go right in order to challenge for the division.

Rockies - Outlook for 2005: It's back to the drawing board in Colorado. After trying to spend money in the recent past to improve, the Rockies have made a real push to youth in 2005. At 31 and 30 respectively, Todd Helton and Preston Wilson are the oldest regular batters in the line-up now that Vinny Castilla and Jeromy Burnitz are gone. The Rockies offence will go only be as productive as Clint Barmes, J.D. Closser and the rest of the 'kids' can make it. Their starters including Canadian Jeff Francis are promising, but the real issue once again becomes the fact that half their games will be played at Coors Field which has eaten up and spat out many pitchers in the past. The Rockies are on the right path with their youth, but are a long way away from being players in the NL West.

Dodgers- Outlook for 2005: It's hard to say what exactly was going on in Los Angeles this off-season. The team throws big money at Jeff Kent, J.D. Drew and Derek Lowe, yet it deals away Shawn Green and lets Adrian Beltre - who finally broke out - leave as a free agent. As always, the strength of the club will be the starting pitching. Odalis Perez had a return to form year in 2004. Playing in L.A. will help lower Lowe's ERA. If Brad Penny is healthy, the Dodgers will be fine. Their bullpen remains excellent with Montreal native Eric Gagne closing the door. The biggest question mark for the club could be defense. Jose Valentin at third and Jeff Kent as second aren't know for their gloves, and considering the team is built on pitching, problems could arise. If they can get enough hitting, and Drew and Kent can stay healthy, the Dodgers could contend for the division.

Padres - Outlook for 2005: After finishing third in a very competitive division in 2004, the Padres are primed to contend again. With their hitters having a year under their belts in the spacious PETCO park, it would be reasonable to expect better numbers from Ryan Klesko who did not enjoy his new home field. The Padres also filled their biggest offensive need by acquiring a legitimate leadoff hitter in Dave Roberts, allowing the club to move Sean Burroughs to the bottom of the lineup. The team has solid starting pitching starting with Jake Peavy who lead all NL starters in ERA. Woody Williams was added to offset the loss of David Wells and Brian Lawrence and Adam Eaton should both continue to improve. The Padres bullpen should continue to be good with Trevor Hoffman closing out games. The Padres are a good team that should be in the thick of things all season long.

Giants - Outlook for 2005: Darren Baker is long gone, but the sign that reads 'No Kids Allowed' must still be hanging somewhere. The Giants enter 2005 as the oldest team in baseball with an average age of around 36 years old in their starting lineup. Barry Bonds remains the key to the offence, but who knows when he'll see the field this year. GM Brian Sabean, desperate to build a winner around the slugger has added Moises Alou to protect Bonds in the lineup. Defensive specialist Mike Matheny isn't A.J. Pierzynski with the bat, but he'll be a welcome addition to the clubhouse. Jason Schmidt could win the Cy Young award and will serve as the anchor of the rotation, which is only decent after him. The Bullpen now has a legitimate stopper for the first time since Rob Nen in Armando Benitez, so if the team has the late lead, it should get closed out. The biggest issue for the Giants is age. Can all the hitters, Bonds included stay healthy over a long season? Along the same lines, can the young pitchers at the back end keep up their part of the bargain and push the club into the playoffs?

60 Canisters of Tear Gas to Arrest "Only 60" Students
Is college basketball really worth rioting about? This is a riduculous story coming out of Michigan this past weekend. Some parents, students and MSU basketball fans are criticizing police use of tear gas and pepper spray to disperse crowds overnight Saturday after the Spartans’ loss to North Carolina in an NCAA men’s Final Four semifinal.

“The people on the street weren’t really doing anything out of the norm. They were just having fun before everyone was gassed,” said Michelle Wozniel, an MSU sophomore who watched the fan reaction from her friend’s second-floor balcony. “I couldn’t breathe. It felt like my nose and throat were on fire.”

MSU fans will get another chance to riot Tuesday night when the lady's team meets Baylor for the NCAA Women's Championship.

NCAA Hoops Championship Goes Tonight

North Carolina (32-4) at Illinois (37-1)
Monday, April 04, 2005 9:20:00 PM EDT
Illinois are 3 point underdogs. The total for this game has been set at 156.5.

North Carolina most recently...
After a win are 9-1
After playing Michigan St are 0-1
When playing on Monday are 5-0
Illinois most recently...
After a win are 9-1
When playing on Monday are 5-0

After a month of upsets, close calls and improbable comebacks it all comes down to this. One game, winner takes all when the North Carolina Tar Heels clash with the Illinois Fighting Illini Monday night in the National Championship game. Neither team had much trouble in their Final Four match-ups, but it should be a different story when these two top seeds face-off Monday. The Illini have had different players stepping up throughout the tourney with Roger Powell Jr., Luther Head and Deron Williams all netting at least 20 points in at least one game. The Tar Heels have ridden the hot hand of big man Sean May who has averaged 21.6 points and 12.8 rebounds through the tourney. Oddsmakers like the Tar Heels in this one, opening the line at 3 in favor of North Carolina. They are 32-4 this season, while the Fighting Illini are 37-1.

Roy Williams's team hopes to build upon an 87-71 win over Spartans. They were 6.5 point favorites in that game. Bruce Weber's team was busy last game winning against Louisville 72-57 as 1.5 point favorites. This game is likely to come down to the Tar Heels's execution on offence. They rank 1st in the league in scoring and look to sustain their 88.4 points per game average against the Fighting Illini's #12-rated defense.
