Italian Soccer Violence
Even by soccer ridiculous standards, they have ratcheted up the level of debauchery at their games. A couple of weeks ago, Mexican soccer fans chanted, ‘Osama, Osama”, at the US Team during a match. Scottish soccer fans recently booed a moment of silence for the Pope, and now this. A soccer match between rival Italian teams had to be halted in the second half after the fans started pelting the goalie with flares. Yes, flares! You know, those things that the highway patrol light on the side of the road to divert traffic away from accidents. They're the same flares that have fire shooting out of the end.

Amazingly, it wasn’t like one jerk-off had a single flare. Instead dozens of flares came raining out of the stadium and landed near the goalie, who had to receive medical treatment for his shoulder. Yeah, I would imagine that getting drilled by a red hot flare might cause a little damage. The play was temporarily resumed after the flares were collected, but that was when round 2 of the flares started. The referee finally called off the match after the police failed to intervene. Hey, why would the cops do anything? Why would the cops have a problem with fans throwing fire onto the field? That’s not dangerous is it? Then again, maybe they're just getting ready for later in the week when Liverpool and Juventus hook up. The last time these two teams met, 39 fans were killed. Maybe they're saving their manpower for that one. Rant courtesy of

WTO Revises Guidelines on Internet Gambling
This is a win - win situation as far as we are concerned. Neither side really came out ahead. As reported by: CIO Today:
The United States and Antigua both claimed to be winners Thursday after the World Trade Organization partly reversed an earlier ruling on US restrictions on cross-border gaming on the Internet. A WTO appeals body accepted that prohibitions in some US states on cross-border gaming were valid and agreed with Washington's argument that some federal laws could "protect public morals or maintain public order."

The appeal had followed an earlier ruling by the WTO's disputes settlement body entirely favoring a complaint brought by the tiny Caribbean island of Antigua and Barbuda. The decision on Thursday effectively allowed state laws in Louisiana, Massachusetts, South Dakota and Utah, reversing the previous negative ruling. Acting US Trade Representative Peter Allgeier welcomed the decision, claiming a "win." "US restrictions on Internet gambling can be maintained. This report essentially says that if we clarify US Internet gambling restrictions in certain ways we'll be fine," he told AFP. But the Caribbean island also claimed in a statement that the decision was "a landmark victory for Antigua as the smallest WTO member to defeat the United States, the largest member."

Nascar Going Under The Lights

NASCAR is about to go under the lights for its season ending race in Miami. The Homestead-Miami Speedway has announced plans to install lights at the facility, which should be completed in time for the "Ford Championship Weekend" - the finale of NASCAR's Nextel Chase for the Championship.

"NASCAR is a national sport that continues to grow into new markets," said NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France. "The prime time start will allow even more fans to tune in for the finale of the Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup." The race is scheduled to start at 4 pm eastern time and will conclude under the lights, when the series champion will be officially crowned.

Speedway officials said the decision to install lights was made following positive feedback from race fans. Musco Lighting, an Academy and Emmy Award winning lighting specialist, will oversee the lighting project at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Schilling's Return Not What He Wanted
Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams socked it to Curt Schilling, and Mariano Rivera stitched up the victory for the Yankees. Giambi shook off a steroid controversy and a slump with a two-run homer to break a sixth-inning tie, and Williams added another homer Wednesday night to chase Boston's postseason hero and give New York a 5-2 victory over the Red Sox. ''I've been working hard. It's starting to pay off,'' said Giambi, who hit .208 last year and was batting .190 this season as he rebounds from an intestinal parasite and offseason reports that put him at the center of baseball's steroid scandal.
Schilling Rivera came on to a standing ovation from the Fenway fans, who remember him blowing four straight saves against the Red Sox -- two in the playoffs as Boston came back from an 0-3 deficit to reach the World Series. But this time Rivera completed the job. It was Schilling's first appearance since blood seeped through his sock in Game 2 of the Series, when he had his right ankle stitched together and shut down the St. Louis Cardinals to set the stage for Boston's first title since 1918.

Daily DUI
The sports stars of the world have been good for a week, therefore this section of our site suffers. But we've got one for you finally. Former All-Star pitcher Matt Keough was arrested for investigation of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Keough's sport utility vehicle crashed at a red light with another SUV on Monday night, pushing it into the crosswalk and causing it to strike a pedestrian, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.

The former Oakland pitcher fled the scene on foot and was found later by sheriff's deputies outside a store in the area, Amormino said, adding that a test about three hours after the crash showed Keough's blood alcohol level was about 2½ times the legal limit.

Lockout shouldn't stop awarding of Cup
There will be a battle for the Stanley Cup this year - at least in court.

With a lockout having killed the NHL season, a group of recreational hockey players has launched a legal fight in an effort to let other teams have a shot at winning the storied trophy. The Wednesday Nighters led by Torontonians David Burt and Gard Shelley and represented by lawyer Tim Gilbert filed a claim against the NHL and the Cup's trustees in Ontario Superior Court on Wednesday. They're seeking a court order declaring that:

  1. The Stanley Cup is being held in trust for hockey's benefit;
  2. The trustees are under obligation to award the Cup every year;
  3. The NHL does not own the Stanley Cup.

If they get their way, they want trustees Brian O'Neill and Ian (Scotty) Morrison to decide on a format to determine a Stanley Cup winner, despite the NHL season's cancellation in February. One suggestion is a tournament featuring the University Cup champion Alberta Golden Bears and the yet to be determined Memorial Cup and Allan Cup champs, but the group isn't pushing a specific plan. Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson suggested in February that it be awarded to the top women's team.

It's RaceBook Betting Time

Horse Racing

Lets get at it shall we? Ever wanted to know how the whole horse race gambling thing worked? Well now is your chance to learn. Check back over the next week for our updating lesson in how to gamble on the horses.

Part 6 - Exacta

With this bet you must pick the first two finishing horses in the order of their finish. In other words, you must pick the horse that wins and the horse that finishes second.

Exacta Box

A "box" on two or more horses in a race means taking all the possible combinations of those horses in each place of finish. If you have determined that two horses are the best in the race but you are not sure which one will win and which one will finish second, then the safest bet is to do the exacta box. You can box more than two horses, but it is very important to remember that with each additional horse you add to the box that the cost of the wager goes up substantially. The formula for calculating the cost of an exacta box is (horses in box x (horses in box minus 1) x dollar amount of bet). A $2 box of two horses would be (2 x 1 x 2) = $4. A $2 box of three horses would be (3 x 2 x 2) = $12. A $2 box of four horses would be (4 x 3 x 2) = $24. As you can see the cost of the exacta box increases greatly with each additional horse. Also remember that you can wager a $1 exacta box. This reduces the amount of your wager by 50% but also reduces your earnings by 50%.

Exacta Wheels

If you are confident in a horse winning a race, but may have several choices as to the second place finisher, you may elect to do an exacta wheel. If for example, you think the #4 horse is going to win and either the #2, #5, #7, or #10 horse will finish second, you could place the following wager: ($2 exacta wheel the 4 WITH the 2, 5, 7, 10). Following the same formula for calculating the cost of the exacta wager as above we have (1 x 4 x 2) = $8. So it will cost you $8 to do an exacta wheel with one horse to win and any one of four horses to finish second. Another point to note is that some horses do not like to win. They allow other horses to pass them without making an extra effort to win the race. This can easily be determined by simply looking at their past performances. If for example, their racing record indicates that they have won one race and have finished second six times, you may want to place multiple horses in the win column and this "seconditis" horse in the place column. The previous wager might be ($2 Exacta Wheel the 2, 5, 7, 10 WITH the 4).

NFL adopts Olympic testosterone standards
The NFL and its players have agreed to follow stricter standards for testosterone levels for the start of next season. The upgrade, which required the approval of the NFL Players Association, had been expected to be adopted, but not until next month, when the NFL and the union hold their annual discussions about revising the drug program.

However, commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Tuesday that the union had approved the new standards, which continue its practice of using the guidelines set by the Olympics.
