Reggie Miller Retirement
Reggie Miller will
retire after the season, ending a career with the Indiana
Pacers in which he became one of the NBA's greatest
"I just sensed that this is something he knows
is right for him to do," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle
said Friday. "I'd love to have him around another
year. This is one of those personal decisions you have
to go with your gut on."
Carlisle spoke after telling the players about Miller's
decision to retire after spending all 18 of his NBA
seasons with the Pacers. Miller, who turns 40 in August,
was at Friday's practice at Conseco Fieldhouse but did
not speak to reporters.
Carlisle said Miller called him Thursday night to tell
him before sister Cheryl Miller reported his impending
retirement on TNT.
Miller holds NBA records for
most 3-pointers made (2,505) and attempted (6,321) and
is the leading scorer in Pacers history with 24,685
points. He appeared in five All-Star games, 131 playoff
games and the 2000 NBA Finals.
Since 1990, the Pacers have made the
playoffs all but one year and have reached the Eastern
Conference playoffs six times. He is averaging 11.9
points as the starting shooting guard for the Pacers,
who play Friday night at home against Houston.

end of the NHL season draws nearer, do you care?
In case you were thinking that there still might be
something left of this year's NHL season worth salvaging
once a deal was struck, think again. It ain't gonna
happen. With a weekend deadline threatening to kill
the season, the NHL and players' association failed
to negotiate an end to the lockout during four hours
of labour talks yesterday.
The already bleak prospects for an NHL season have
taken yet another turn for worse, possibly for the final
time, despite the assistance of American mediators.
Bill Daly, the NHL's executive vice-president and chief
legal officer, who all but pronounced the season to
"It's disappointing," Daly told a news conference
following the four-hour session at the league's Toronto
head office. "We are absolutely disappointed with
where we are (today).""I hoped at the end
of the day that reason would prevail, that we would
find some common ground... but that hasn't happened."
Ted Saskin, senior director of the NHLPA, was equally

Nevada's casinos won record $10.6 billion last year
One would think
that going to a state that is famous for taking your
money that people might not want to head there that
much. But they keep on going don't they??
Nevada casinos fired on all cylinders in 2004, winning
a record $10.6 billion from gamblers after posting little
or no gain for four years. The record haul for the state's
top industry was a 9.7 percent jump from the $9.6 billion
by Nevada's casinos in 2003, and more than double the
average yearly increase over the past 10 years.
The state Gaming Control Board released its monthly
report today showing gross revenue from the 260 casinos
in Nevada reached $852.5 million in December, an 11.1
percent gain from the same month of 2003. The December
performance was led by casinos along the Las Vegas Strip
that reported $437.6 million in win, up 15.5 percent.

Phoenix are 9.5 point
favorites. The total for this game has been set at 228.5.
Seattle will try to end the
Suns winning streak at 3 games Friday when they visit
Phoenix.Sporting a 34-13 overall record and a
7-4 mark within the division, the SuperSonics aim to
knock the Suns (6-1 In the division) for a loss.
Oddsmakers like the Suns in this
one, opening the line at 8 in favor of Phoenix. They
are 39-11 this season, while the SuperSonics are 34-13.
The SuperSonics hope their 115-point explosion last
game in a win vs. the Kings was no fluke and that their
defence can keep Phoenix in check. Last game went over
the closing total.
The Suns defeated the Kings 125-123
as 2.5 point pick. That contest went over the closing
total. Expect the league's #1 offence to chuck in lots
of points and generate trouble for the SuperSonics defence.
Averaging 109.8 points per game, the Suns can run up
the score if they get on a roll.

Nextel Season Preview - Daytona
500 Is Close
And so another NASCAR Nextel Cup season is about to
begin. The teams have readied themselves for the 47th
running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 20th
amid another year of change.
In 2004, the series saw the end of a 30-year relationship
with the R.J. Reynolds Co. and the seamless beginning
of another with Nextel. It also saw the implementation
of a new title format and the advent of the 10-race
"Chase for the Championship." Last year saw
the semi-retirement of 16-time Most Popular Driver Award
winner Bill Elliott. This year we will see another gentleman
leave the series - Terry Labonte will run only a partial
schedule in 2005.

Two more stalwarts will make their final tours around
the country. Veterans Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace
have made the decisions to move on after the 2005
season. Their decisions were probably made easier
by the emergence of a young group of drivers who have
changed the sport.

Malone announces retirement today as well
Malone is retiring, ending a career in which he became
one of the NBA's greatest power forwards and was No.
2 on the league's all-time scoring list.Malone, who
teamed with guard John Stockton for 18 seasons with
Utah to form one of the NBA's greatest duos, will
announce his retirement Sunday at the Delta Center,
the Jazz said Friday
those days great. Stockton to the Mailman. Man, what
a combination. With him and Reggie retiring today we're
witnessing two first ballot hall of famers retiring
on the same day. When was the last time that happened??
The 41-year-old Malone underwent
knee surgery last summer and has not played since last
season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He joined the Lakers
at a greatly reduced salary before last season in an
attempt to win an elusive NBA championship by playing
with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. Detroit beat
Los Angeles in the NBA final in five games.
His agent, Dwight Manley, said
Malone was "very serious" about returning
to action with the San Antonio Spurs before he decided
to retire. TSN.ca
