Earnhardt earns first win of season
The roar from the crowd told the story after Sunday's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway: Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back.

The fan favourite finally appears to have broken out of a nearly season-long slump.

A sellout crowd of about 100,000 at the suburban Chicago track was howling its approval as the jubilant Earnhardt celebrated his first win of the season by smoking the tires of his No. 8 Chevrolet and hugging crew members in the infield grass.

Jimmie Johnson, the series points leader, came back from a lap down to finish third, followed by Vickers and Stewart.

"It's been a long time coming, man," said Earnhardt. "It's a lot of emotion, more than I can handle right now.

The Quest for 7 for Lance!

For American Lance Armstrong and his Tour de France challengers, the real test begins now - in the thin air of the Alps on snaking climbs lined by screaming fans. The mountains put everyone back in their place, and on Monday as the 175 riders left after the opening week of the three-week race enjoyed their first rest day, we all can't wait to see it happen.

Only by keeping rivals at bay on the relentlessly long and steep ascents can Armstrong retire at the finish in Paris on July 24 with a seventh consecutive victory. And only by taking the fight to the six-time champion can his challengers hope to break his record streak. Armstrong heads into Tuesday's first Alpine stage from Grenoble to the ski station of Courchevel with a sizable but not invincible lead over his main rivals - Jan Ullrich, Alexandre Vinokourov and Andreas Kloeden of the T-Mobile squad, and Italian Ivan Basso of Team CSC, which is using Canadian-make bicycles.

British Open Betting
Nicklaus Jack Nicklaus never has been one for a ceremonial farewell, although he understands the relationship with Scottish fans is different. They embraced him as a 24-year-old with a crew cut and indomitable will, and they will embrace him as an aging champion in his final major.

This will be his 164th start in a major, including 146 in a row from the 1962 Masters through the 1998 U.S. Open. And while his 18 majors define his career, even more staggering is that Nicklaus was a runner-up 19 times. As a former British Open champion, he is eligible to play until he is 65. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club recognized this was his last year of eligibility, so it changed the rotation to make St. Andrews the host course in 2005, one year ahead of schedule.

On July 14, all roads will lead to the Old Course in St. Andrew’s, Scotland where the British Open will be held this year. The world’s biggest names in golf will once again meet and compete for the coveted Golf Champion Trophy. Will another unknown American like last year’s champ Todd Hamilton win the Claret Jug this year? Or will British Open veterans Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, and David Duval regain their winning forms and earn another Open title?

In the history of the British Open, the oldest winner ever to win the championship was Old Tom Morris in 1867 who was then 46 years old. The youngest winner ever was his own son Young Tom (Tom Morris Jr.) who won the British Open in 1868 at just 17 years of age. Young Tom also holds the record as the youngest competitor to ever the play in the British Open. He first played in 1865 when he was just 14 years old.

• Originally, the prize for the winner of British Open was the Challenge Belt which was made of rich Morocco leather and embellished with a silver buckle and emblems. The Claret Jug, officially called the Golf Championship Trophy, was first presented at the British Open in 1873. It was made by Mackay Cunningham and Company of Edinburgh.

• The Old Course in St. Andrews has been host to British Open 27 times, including this year’s tournament. British Open Lines Are UP >>
