World Series of Poker (WSOP) Kicks off This Week in New Home

WSOP Gambling 2005 is a milestone year for the World Series of Poker (WSOP), which is moving casinos for the first time since the championship's inception. Since the first WSOP convened in 1970, the competition has been held at Las Vegas's historic Binion's Horseshoe Casino, which since being bought out last year, has been trimmed down to just "Binion's."

As a result of the WSOP's monumental growth, the championship was forced to move to a larger venue, Harrah's Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The crowds at Binion's last year were overwhelming, and this year's turnout is expected to be several times that of last year. Thus, the WSOP opted for the Rio's 60,000-sq. ft. convention center. For the sake of tradition, however, the World Series will return to Binion's for the final event's last two days.

With the 36th World Series of Poker is just days away, anticipation is mounting for the world championship, which expects to draw 6,600 players, each vying for their piece of the $60 million prize pool. The WSOP will run between June 2nd and July 15th, hosting over 40 events in total. The last nine days of the WSOP will be devoted to the final world championship event.

Zito elected to racing Hall

At long last, trainer Nick Zito will find out what it's like to be inducted into racing's Hall of Fame instead of attending the ceremony and wondering. "I remember just about every one of them, and I just loved it," Zito said yesterday after being elected to the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame. "It's a great, great honor."

Zito, voted into the Hall in his eighth year of eligibility, will be inducted Aug. 8 at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., along with three standouts in steeplechase racing -- jockey Thomas Walsh, trainer Sidney Watters Jr. and five-time champion Lonesome Glory. Under a new voting format, nominees in four racing categories -- trainer, jockey, contemporary male horse and contemporary female horse -- must receive 75 percent of the votes to be elected.

Green Bay to retire Reggie White's number

The Green Bay Packers will retire Reggie White's number at halftime ceremonies of their home opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 18.

Team president Bob Harlan said he had told White before his death last December that he wanted to add his No. 92 to the retired numbers listed in the north end zone at Lambeau Field. "He was thrilled. He kept saying what an honor that would be," Harlan said.

White, who suffered from a respiratory ailment, died Dec. 26 at age 43. More on this story here.

The French Open

French crowd favorite Mary Pierce toppled top-seeded American Lindsay Davenport, while Belgian star Justine Henin- Hardenne disposed of second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova on Tuesday to reach the semifinals at the 2005 French Open. The 2000 French Open titlist Pierce, seeded 21st here, blasted a tired Davenport 6-3, 6-2 to reach her third Roland Garros semifinal. Pierce was the French Open runner-up in 1994.

Pierce advanced in 1 hour, 21 minutes with the help of 23 unforced errors and six double faults from Davenport, who needed all three sets to win her first four matches at this fortnight. The Frenchwoman broke Davenport's big serve five times in the lopsided affair, which saw Pierce win 11 of the first 14 games.

Pierce improved to 3-8 lifetime against Davenport, who had won their previous four meetings. The two stars hadn't met since 1999. The three-time Grand Slam champion Davenport still needs the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam. The big American hasn't captured a major crown since winning the 2000 Australian Open.

Report: ESPN ends NHL negotiations

Well being Canadian this doesn't totally suprise me, but it does show just how incompetant Gary Bettman is. This man couldn't negotiate his way out of dairy queen. Way to go Gary.....Hockey on tv in the US is done for with the news that the NHL has lost its only remaining U.S. cable TV rights holder.

According to a report in the Globe and Mail, ESPN announced on Tuesday that they have ended contract negotiations with the league. "Right now we're done negotiating," Mark Shapiro, ESPN's executive president for programming and production told the paper. "We held various discussions and had several meetings with Gary (Bettman, the NHL commissioner) and his team. And unfortunately, we were not able to get a deal done."
