Rome's Rant Of The Day

49ers Training Video Fiasco

An in house video meant to prepare players for dealing with the media backfired when it was leaked to the San Francisco Chronicle. The 15 minute film, featuring racist jokes, lesbian soft porn and topless blondes, features the team’s PR Director Kirk Reynolds. The tape has Reynolds impersonating San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in the mayor’s office and other city scenes. Needless to say, the mayor, leaders in the gay community and the Asian community are outraged. People are funny that way; they don’t liked being mocked, humiliated and marginalized.

The team’s owners act as if they’re outraged, and certainly they’re embarrassed. Kirk Reynolds called it a “terrible mistake”, when he spoke to the AP Wednesday. Reynolds said, “I’m more sorry than anybody. My intention was to deliver a message important to our team. Certainly the execution and my decision were way out of line. I deeply regret it

Reynolds mentioned he made the video to coach players on handling media questions in diverse San Francisco and that he never meant it for public consumption. The bottom line here is, I need to preface this by saying, I’m friends with Kirk Reynolds. We went to college together. We worked in college radio together. We go way back. I’ve known the guy 20 years, see him at the Super Bowl every year and I’m here to tell you this is a good guy. A very popular guy and well respected in his industry, but what he did was every bit as offensive as it was stupid. jimrome.com

Dennis Rodman to Compete in Wife-Carrying Race

Dennis Rodman, who notoriously horrified brides everywhere by donning a wedding dress, will once again flirt with the trappings of marital bliss without actually walking down the aisle.
Rodman Instead, the 44-year-old will work out his legs in the 2005 Wife Carrying World Championships scheduled for July 2 in Sonkajarvi, Finland. Race officials will allow Rodman to borrow a "wife" -- who must be at least 108 pounds and 17 years old -- to participate.

In the bizarre race, women are flung upside down over a man's back with just her legs over his shoulders while he sprints to a finish line 250 meters away. The silly event is born from the 19th century practice of wife stealing in which a man would cart away his intended, thus proving he is man enough -- in strength, chutzpah and arrogance -- to capture a lady. zap2it.com

McNabb & Owens

Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens aren't feuding. Or so says the Eagles' quarterback

McNabb said Thursday he has talked to Owens since they exchanged verbal shots earlier this offseason. He insists his relationship with the All-Pro wide receiver isn't strained.

"We talked. Things are great," McNabb said with a hint of sarcasm.

Though he was unwilling to reveal details of the discussion, McNabb predicted Owens will report to training camp. Owens has been holding out of offseason minicamps because he wants to renegotiate the seven-year deal worth almost $49 million US he signed in March 2004.

"He will be at camp. Now if he shows up to camp, he shows up. If he doesn't, hey, I'm just telling you my opinion," McNabb said Thursday after the second day of passing camp. ESPN.com

Jamal Lewis Out Of The Pen

Baltimore Ravens running back Jamal Lewis was released Thursday morning from a Florida prison camp after completing a four-month sentence for using a cellphone to try to set up a cocaine deal.

Lewis was expected to head to a halfway house in Atlanta for a two-month term.

"I just spoke to Jamal, he was released early this morning," said Kevin Byrne, a team spokesman. "He seemed to be in a very good mood."

Damn right he's in a good mood. Wouldn't you be? TSN.ca

Shaquille O'Neal scored 20 points to lead Miami to an 88-76 win over Detroit in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals at AmericanAirlines Arena. Dwyane Wade had 15 points for the Heat but spent the majority of the fourth quarter in the locker room as he was being treated for a sprained rib.

Miami (59-23) at Detroit (54-28) Saturday, June 04, 2005 8:00 PM EDT at Palace of Auburn Hills No line yet available on this game. No total yet available on this game.

Miami's Udonis Haslem had his best game of the series with 14 points and 13 rebounds, helping make up for a sub-par offensive effort from Eddie Jones (seven points). Butler contributed 12 points off the bench, including seven in the fourth quarter, and Damon Jones scored 15.

"Their energy was a lot greater than ours," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "In Game 4 our big guys got four or five dunks on the break. We didn't see any of that tonight. They just played a lot better."

The rules of Roulette

The Basics
Players, usually up to eight, play against the house represented by the croupier also called the dealer, who spins the roulette wheel and handles the wagers and payouts. In the European roulette and French roulette version, the wheel has 37 slots representing 36 numbers and one zero. In the USA most roulette wheels have two zeros and therefore 38 slots.

Each player buys-in a different colored chips so their bets don't get mixed up. At the end of play, if you won, you exchange back the colored chips with cash chips. These are special chips with the value amount imprinted on them. There are several denominations in various colors. You then take these chips to the cash desk where they will give you actual cash money in exchange.

To play roulette, you place your bet or bets on numbers (any number including the zero) in the table layout or on the outside, and when everybody at the table had a chance to place their bets, the croupier starts the spin and launches the ball. Just a few moments before the ball is about to drop over the slots, the croupier says 'no more bets'. From that moment no one is allowed to place - or change - their bets until the ball drops on a slot. Only after the croupier places the dolly on the winning number on the roulette table and clears all the losing bets you can then start placing your new bets while the croupier pays the winners. The winners are those bets that are on or around the number that comes up. Also the bets on the outside of the layout win if the winning number is represented.

The house advantage
On a single zero roulette table the house advantage is 2.7%. On a double zero roulette table it is 5.26% (7.9% on the five-number bet, 0-00-1-2-3). The house advantage is gained by paying the winners a chip or two (or a proportion of it) less than what it should have been if there was no advantage. (See Roulette Quiz - The Casino Advantage.)

The 'En Prison' rule
A roulette rule applied to even-money bets only, and by some casinos (not all). When the outcome is zero, some casinos will allow the player to either take back half his/her bet or leave the bet (en prison = in prison) for another roulette spin. In the second case, if the following spin the outcome is again zero, then the whole bet is lost.

The 'La Partage' rule
The la partage roulette rule is similar to the en prison rule, only in this case the player loses half the bet and does not have the option of leaving the bet en prison for another spin. This refers to the 'outside' even-money bets Red/Black, High/Low, Odd/Even and applies when the outcome is zero. Both the La Partage and the En Prison roulette rules essentially cut the casino edge on the 'even-money bets' in half. So a bet on Red on a single-zero roulette table with the la partage rule or the en prison rule has a 1.35% house edge and one on a double-zero roulette table has a house edge of 2.63%.

The payouts
A bet on one number only, called a straight-up bet, pays 35 to 1. (You collect 36. With no house advantage you should collect 37 (38 in the USA on double zero roulette wheels).
A two-number bet, called split bet, pays 17 to 1.
A three-number bet, called street bet, pays 11 to 1.
A four-number bet, called corner bet, pays 8 to 1.
A six-number bet, pays 5 to 1.
A bet on the outside dozen or column, pays 2 to 1.
A bet on the outside even money bets, pays 1 to 1.

Object of the game
To win at roulette the player needs to predict where the ball will land after each spin. This is by no means easy. In fact, luck plays an important part in this game. Some players go with the winning numbers calling them 'hot' numbers and therefore likely to come up more times. Others see which numbers did not come up for some time and bet on them believing that their turn is now due. Some players bet on many numbers to increase their chances of winning at every spin, but this way the payout is considerably reduced. Other methodical players use specific roulette systems or methods, money management systems, or both.

WSOP Odds and Lines

WSOP Gambling
Online poker room Pokertropolis released opening odds for this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP) final event winner. Strangely enough, Hollywood stars often outshone poker stars in the odds listing. The top bet according to Pokertropolis is actor Ben Affleck at 450-1. Close behind, Tobey Maguire was set at 500-1, with James Woods in at 700-1. Other Hollywood names to grace the online poker site's odds listing include Matthew Perry, Don Cheadle, Shannon Elizabeth, Dennis Rodman, David Schwimmer, Danny Masterson, Chris Masterson, Mena Suvari and Charlie Sheen, all with odds of 1,000-1.

In the pro poker player's corner, last year's WSOP winner, Greg "Fossilman" Raymer, won respectable odds of 600-1. His pro poker colleagues, however, did not fare quite as well. Paul "Eskimo" Clark was pinned at 800-1, Kathy Liebert and Phil Helmuth, Jr., at 900-1, while Annie Duke and Chris Moneymaker were put all the way down at 1000-1. Even David Anthony Williams, who last year finished the WSOP in second place, got odds of 1200-1.

Whose going to come out on top? The action gets underway June 3rd, with the main event not for a couple weeks.

At Bodog.com there are over 25 ways to bet on the World Series of Poker. Check back here for the entire set of World Series of Poker odds here very soon.
