Williams sisters turned out to be one too many
for Jill Craybas.
by younger sister Serena's loss at Wimbledon,
two-time champion Venus Williams advanced to
the quarter-finals Monday by beating fellow
American Craybas 6-0, 6-2.
Craybas upset Serena in the third
round, then returned less than 48 hours later to the
same stage - cozy Court 2, known as the Graveyard
of Champions. This time Craybas lost the first six
games and the last six.
"It's probably a really
big challenge mentally to play Serena and me in a
row," Venus said. "I guess I had a good
position to be second sister."
In the past six years, the sisters
have lost to the same player at only three Grand Slam
events. Averting such a sweep was motivation, Venus
"A little bit for my sister,"
she said, "but mostly for me."
Defending champion Maria Sharapova,
seeded second, never faced a break point and beat
No. 16 Nathalie Dechy of France 6-4, 6-2. Sharapova
was one of four Russian women to reach the final eight,
a Grand Slam record.Top-ranked American Lindsay Davenport,
the 1999 champion, beat No. 15 Belgian Kim Clijsters
6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Clijsters double-faulted three
times in the final game, including on match point,
then slammed her racket to the grass.

|M's pitcher uses public
bathroom during game?
were dismayed to find out when they got here that
the beautiful, still-new Petco Park does not have
a bathroom in the visitors' bullpen, which is
down the right-field line, on the opposite side
of the field from the visitors' bench.
No one was more dismayed than
lefty Matt Thornton, who had go to the bathroom during
the game Friday night. To do so, he had to climb over
a fence to reach a public restroom, where he had to
stand in line, according to the SEATTLE TIMES
So in all honesty the story should
of gone like this....
If you saw a Seattle Mariner
next to you at a Petco Park urinal Friday night, you
weren't drunk. Well, you might have been inebriated,
but, that was still a Mariner you saw. I'll assume
you have a bathroom at your office. Matt Thornton
wasn't so lucky. Thornton's Mariners were in San Diego
to play the Padres. Nature called while Thornton was
sitting in the visitors' right field bullpen. Alas,
the Padres neglected to build a bathroom in the right
field pen. Thornton jumped the fence, found the john
and waited in line like everyone else.
This could only happen in San
Diego. Could you imagine Braden Looper waiting in
line for the men’s room after blowing another
save Sunday night against the Yankees? He'd get his
ass kicked. Latroy Hawkins wouldn't have lasted five
minutes if forced to use a Wrigley bathroom in April.
Nope. Only in San Diego.

2005 NBA Draft Rumors
With the NBA Draft
today, rumours of player movement are in full
swing. Get the latest from around the league
AROUND THE Newspapers
Reports in the Toronto Star and New Orleans
Times-Picayune indicate that the Raptors have
discussed acquiring centre Jamaal Magloire,
with the Hornets asking for their seventh and
The Globe and Mail has reported
that the Toronto Raptors are endeavouring to move
up from their seventh pick in the first round, and
GM Rob Babcock admits to having discussions to that
In other Raptors news, the Chicago
Tribune reports that club is willing to move Morris
Peterson and the seventh pick to get the third pick
from the Portland Trail Blazers.
According to the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel, a Caron Butler, Vlade Divac and the tenth
pick to Portland for the third pick and Ruben Patterson
deal could also be in the works.
In other third pick news, the
Jazz are reported very interested in Illinois' Deron
Williams and the team is working hard on trading up
to get him. According to the Salt Lake Tribune here
is how the deal could pan out: Portland would take
Williams at three. The Jazz would then take Gerald
Green, Martell Webster or Channing Frye with their
sixth pick. The teams would swap picks with the Jazz
perhaps moving the 27th and/or the 34th pick to get
the deal done.
The Charlotte Observer floats
the idea that if Wake Forest PG Chris Paul is still
on the board at number three, the Bobcats could swing
a deal with Portland for that third pick in exchange
for Charlotte's picks at five and 13. The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution reports that the Hawks could
deal their second pick for the Bobcats' pair of first-round
The South Florida Sun Sentinel
believes that Celtics star Paul Pierce could be moved
as part of a draft-night deal.
The Pacers and Lakers have talked
about sending Jonathan Bender and the 17th pick to
L.A. for Slava Medvedenko and the tenth pick. The
Pacers would then try to draft Charlie Villanueva
according to the New York Daily News.
According to The New York Post
the Knicks will take Channing Frye with the eighth
pick. If Frye is taken, the Pistons will select 17-year
old high school senior Andrew Bynum.
The Orlando Sentinal reports
that the Magic will take Martell Webster, a 6 foot-7
shooting guard from Seattle Preparatory School if
he is still on the board when the Magic draft 11th.
In Cavalier news, the Akron
Beacon Journal reports that the team has interest
in free-agent point guard Antonio Daniels, and is
looking to move swingman Jiri Welsch for a second
The New York Times had this
interesting draft stat: Of the 143 players selected
in the first round from 2000 to 2004, only 47, about
a third, were full-time starters last season. Only
6 of the 143 have appeared in the All-Star Game.
The Boston Herald reports that
forward Antoine Walker recently told friends at an
NBA function that he heard New York and Sacramento
are preparing offers for his services.
According to the New York Post,
the Quentin Richardson to the Knicks deal for Kurt
Thomas deal has hit a snag. The Knicks have discovered
they are not insured if he sustains a career-ending,
back-related injury. The paper believes the deal will
still get done, but it may take some more time.

|George is pissed!
is growing impatient, a sign that changes are
ahead for the New York Yankees.
It took a dramatic ninth-inning comeback Sunday
to avoid getting swept by the New York Mets
at Yankee Stadium, and even with Monday's 6-4
win at Baltimore the Yankees are 5½ games
behind first-place Boston in the AL East.
Team executives are due in Tampa, Fla., on
Tuesday for meetings with the Boss that could
be a prelude to trades aimed at improving poor
pitching and disastrous defence.

will still suck!
owner Dan Gilbert first looked right, toward his new
general manager. Then left, at Cleveland's rookie coach.
''This is our team,''
proclaimed Gilbert, flanked at a table by GM Danny
Ferry and coach Mike Brown. ''We have our team in
place and we're going forward with this team.''
One without Larry Brown, who
was nowhere near Gund Arena - and doesn't sound like
he'll be coming anytime soon.
Ferry, part of one of the most
debated trades in Cleveland history, came back to
the Cavaliers on Monday as the club's GM. Armed with
a five-year contract, he'll take over a team with
$25 million US in salary cap space to spend this summer
on free agents to complement star forward LeBron James.
With the NBA draft Tuesday and
free agency opening July 1, Gilbert, who said he interviewed
22 candidates for the GM position before hiring Ferry,
couldn't afford to wait any longer to finalize his

24 - The Jaguars had Ty Law in for
a workout on Thursday, the Florida Times-Union reports.
The free agent cornerback, who was cut by the Patriots
after last season, is just starting to make cuts after
more than a month of running on his surgically repaired
foot. Coach Jack Del Rio said they'll bring the veteran
in for a workout and a physical. "We had a good
visit and we'll continue to monitor the situation,''
Coach Jack Del Rio said.
Jun. 24 - Former Southern Cal
defensive tackle Manuel Wright, who
is eligible for the July 14 supplemental draft, is
generating plenty of interest around the league. The
Jaguars brought Wright in for a visit on Thursday
According to ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli,
the Falcons aren't quite as interested in Schulters
as many outsiders assume they are. Schulters, released
by the Titans last Thursday, will visit the Dolphins
on Thursday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
While Michael Barrow
did not participate in the Redskins' minicamp this
weekend, he was on hand to take part in drills under
the direction of team trainers. The Washington Post
reports that his performance might have saved him
from the cut list.
Cleveland, Seattle and Houston
remain interested in Peter Boulware,
but want him at the right price, ESPN.com's John Clayton
reports. Boulware still wants $3 million to $4 million
because he believes he has a 10-sack season ahead
According to ESPN.com's John
Clayton, the 49ers would have signed Koren
Robinson once the Seahawks released him but
they were concerned about the public reaction. Instead,
they opted to sign Johnnie Morton. Chiefs GM Carl
Peterson told the Kansas City Star the team will discuss
whether to bring Robinson in for a visit, but he also
noted the team is committed to developing its young
