WSOP Update

Jennifer Tilly

Jennifer Tilly: WSOP Champion? Bracelet Nabbed by Actress, Takes Celebrity Poker to New Heights - Jennifer Tilly surprised them all when she conquered 600 other players to emerge with her first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet. Event number 26, the Ladies Event No-limit Hold'em, indeed crowned Tilly as champion and made the actress $158,625 richer. Tilly, known for her roles in "quality" flicks such as 'Bride of Chucky', and 'Seed of Chucky,' showed that although perhaps not Oscar caliber in her main profession, she is champion material around the poker table. It likely didn't hurt that her boyfriend is pro poker player Phil 'Unabomber' Laak. Has Tilly been getting a few privileged pointers from the beau, or is she just a natural?

Todd and Doyle Brunson Become First Father/Son Pair to Each Win WSOP Bracelets - This past Thursday marked WSOP history, with Doyle and Todd Brunson becoming the first father/son duo each to have captured WSOP bracelets. Todd Brunson took his first Gold bracelet while playing in last week's $2,500 buy-in Omaha High-Low event. His father, poker legend Doyle Brunson, on the other hand, has had multiple WSOP victories, including two championship wins. Upon hearing about his son's victory, Doyle reportedly called out his son's name, and when Todd looked up, Doyle took off his trademark cowboy hat and took a bow for his son. Todd, though still lingering somewhat in the shadow of his father's career, has already had wins in ten other major poker events. Only time will tell if this WSOP victory, and the many victories certainly on their way, will help Todd create a name for himself, separate from his father's accomplishments.

NFL Gossip
• Word from Seattle was the Seahawks were a bit leery about paying the asking price of former Ravens defensive end/linebacker Peter Boulware, a player who missed the entire 2004 season after microfracture knee surgery. Should Boulware significantly lower his price, the Seahawks might seriously consider adding him to the roster.

• A source close to the Steelers believes the team might not have much leverage in any contract extension talks with wide receiver Hines Ward, who has produced consistently on the field and is popular in Pittsburgh. After declining to sign wide receiver Plaxico Burress to an extension, the Steelers will have to give Ward a lucrative deal to keep him around. Ward is entering the final year of his contract.

• We hear Patriots safety Rodney Harrison is dissatisfied with his contract situation, having outperformed the six-year deal he signed as a free agent in 2003. Word is, it had been intimated to Harrison that the team would sit down with him if he performed well, something he certainly has done as the unquestioned leader of a young secondary.

• Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers is said to be in the best shape of his career, and blew everyone away by running his post-workout wind sprints – a total of 200 yards – in the same time range as the defensive backs and receivers.

• Don't be fooled by the fact Mike Anderson was listed as the No. 1 running back in a recent mini-camp in Denver. The Broncos are excited with the way Tatum Bell has committed himself to the weight room (adding 10 pounds of bulk) and to learning the playbook, and he's all but certain to be given the first crack at the starting job.

• Word from South Florida is Dolphins 2004 first-round pick Vernon Carey looks like a different player altogether and has the inside track at the outside left tackle spot ahead of Damion McIntosh. Observers say it's obvious that O-line coach Hudson Houck is pressing the buttons with Carey that Tony Wise didn't in 2004. We hear Carey is in better shape and more confident, and held his own against Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor during spring practice.

The 2005 NBA Draft
Owning the first pick in the NBA draft for the first time in 11 years, the Milwaukee Bucks went for immediate help in Utah 7-foot sophomore Andrew Bogut.

The selection of Bogut gave Utah the first picks in the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year for the first time in modern draft history. Quarterback Alex Smith was selected first overall by San Francisco in the NFL draft in April.

Here's the top 10 NBA Picks for 2005

1) Milwaukee Andrew Bogut 7-0 245 C Utah
I still believe that Marvin Williams should have been the No. 1 pick in the draft.

2) Atlanta Marvin Williams 6-9 230 SF North Carolina
The Hawks were tempted to draft Chris Paul because of their need at the point

3) Utah (from Portland) Deron Williams 6-3 210 PG Illinois
The Jazz made a smart move by trading up for Deron Williams.

4) New Orleans Chris Paul 6-1 195 PG Wake Forest
The Hornets are the big winners early on in the draft. They get an elite point guard at No. 4

5) Charlotte Raymond Felton 6-1 180 PG North Carolina
There's a run on point guards! Felton is an interesting pick for the Bobcats.

6) Portland (from Utah) Martell Webster 6-7 235 SG Seattle Prep (WA)
The Blazers have cooled on Gerald Green the past few days and warmed to Martell Webster.

7) Toronto Charlie Villanueva 6-11 240 PF Connecticut
Wow. Didn't see that one coming. What is Rob Babcock thinking? Don't Villanueva and Chris Bosh play the same position.

8) New York Channing Frye 6-11 250 C Arizona
OK, we're back on track. The Knicks promised Frye that they'd take him before the Chicago pre-draft camp

9) Golden State Ike Diogu 6-9 250 PF Arizona State
I think this is a great pick for the Warriors. I like Ike. They needed some inside toughness and rebounding.

10) LA Lakers Andrew Bynum 7-0 300 C St. Joseph HS (NJ)
So much for instant impact. Is Bynum the next Shaq? Bynum has the size and ability to be dominant.

Top Sports Records
A favorite site of ours this week is running a feature on the inevitable debate that arises among sports fans concerning the record that is the least likely to ever be broken, many people are quick to cite Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hit streak.

But there are many other -- perhaps lesser-known -- achievements by athletes or teams that are likely to still be standing well into the future. Here are the list of top unbreakable sports records. We'll feature 2 records a day until we get to #1 on Friday.

Number 8

Ty Cobb's .366 career batting average - Baseball

The Georgia Peach played 24 seasons from 1905 to 1928, and outside of his rookie year, he never hit below .316. Regardless of one's opinion of Cobb as a person, his incredible statistics are indisputable: he hit over .380 nine times, batted above .400 three times, and finished with a career batting average of .366, well ahead of Rogers Hornsby, whose .358 places him second.

The closest active player is Todd Helton of the Colorado Rockies, who entered the 2005 season hitting .339, meaning that Cobb's lofty average is in no danger of being surpassed yet.

The most no-hitters, the most points in a single game, and more

Number 7

Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters - Baseball

Nolan Ryan broke into baseball in 1966 as the second-youngest player in the league. By the time he retired as Major League Baseball's oldest in 1993, he had thrown seven no-hitters, making him by far the all-time record holder (Sandy Koufax sits second, with four). Ryan's first no-no came on May 15, 1973, and he recorded his second exactly two months later.

He then proceeded to record one in each of the next two seasons, threw another in 1981 to set the record, and then added one no-hitter per season in 1990 and 1991 (made all the more incredible by his advanced age of 43 and 44 years old, respectively) to seal his position on top.
