NFL Free Agency

Flutie
Free agency isn't the answer for finding a young starting quarterback. That's not surprising because teams don't want their quarterbacks on the open market.

Well, the first week of free agency has been hectic, to say the least, and there are always a couple of clues in the first wave of signings that will help shed some light on the next few months around the NFL. With 32 teams trying to push for 84 starters, expect free agency to move fast. The players who don't get the big dollars in the first 10 days could be out of luck. Signings will continue until the middle of training camp in August, but those who didn't hit the jackpot in the first 10 days will struggle.

Here are the twists and turns you should look for in this year's free agency period: NFL.com Coverage - ESPN Coverage - ESPN.com Salary Cap Space by Team

Steroids Meet Congress - Selig, others invited to testify

Former slugger Jose Canseco and several players he has accused of joining him in abusing steroids have been invited to testify before a House committee.

Congress' List of Invitees

Jose Canseco
Jason Giambi
Mark McGwire
Rafael Palmeiro
Curt Schilling
Sammy Sosa
Frank Thomas
Panel II
Bud Selig
Sandy Alderson
Don Fehr

"There's a cloud over baseball, and perhaps a public discussion of the issues, with witnesses testifying under oath, can provide a glimpse of sunlight," said Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., chairman of the House Government Reform Committee. Robert Saunooke, Canseco's attorney, told Fox Sports Radio that his client would appear if given immunity. "Jose has always said he's more than happy to do that, welcomes it, and has been hopeful that Major League Baseball and the player's association will start being more forthright in the revelations that he has made in the book," Saunooke said.

Fantasy Football - Raiders Perspective

Fantasy Football - Raiders
Certain athletes, and usually just a select few, bring a distinct voltage level to their surrounding airspace wherever they go.

Randy Moss is definitely on the Electrical A List, and as he proved on his first official day as an Oakland Raider, the wattage needle seems permanently stuck on high with this guy. It's so much so that you can feel the hair standing up on the back of your own neck.

The Raiders offense just got a major boost, and the one who will benefit the most will be quarterback Kerry Collins. In 2005, Collins was totally erratic -- one week he would throw three or more touchdowns, the next he'd throw three interceptions. Part of the reason for his subpar play was because the Raiders were playing from behind, which meant throwing the ball a lot. They won't be in those situations as often in 2005 because of Moss, who will still get double coverage, which will benefit the other Raiders greatly.

Collins is now the quarterback who could see 300-yard passing games regularly (not Culpepper). Remember, not only does he have Moss, but he also has big-bodied receiver Jerry Porter and speed demon Ronald Curry, along with some up-and-coming tight ends.

The 2005 NFL Draft - Consensus First Round Picks

Alex Smith

Alex Smith, QB, Utah

Everyday right here you can preview the top picks for this years big college football entry draft into the the big boys league........the NFL of course. Lets get at it. Alex Smith, QB, Utah.....Could we see him go #8 to the Arizona Cardinals?

Toiled in relative anonymity in Utah, but the 6'4", 205-pounder put up big numbers for the undefeated Utes, completing 66.1% of his passes for 2624 yards, 28 touchdowns and only four interceptions. He was also athletic enough to run for 563 yards and ten touchdowns. Since Dennis Green and the Cardinals passed on getting a top quarterback last year, then had three different starters this year, it makes sense to bring stability to the most important position on the field.

NCAA HOOPS Saturday - Game Of The Day
NBA LinesClick Here

No. 13 Syracuse at No. 16 Connecticut, 4:00 PM ET, CBS

Connecticut are 5.5 point favorites. No total yet available on this game.

It all comes down to this. Connecticut and Syracuse have practically led a parallel existence the last few weeks rolling through a successful stretch that includes 700-win milestones for coaches Jim Calhoun and Jim Boeheim. The winners of the last two NCAA titles meet Saturday in Storrs to close out the regular season with the Big East championship up for grabs. The 15th-ranked Huskies (20-6) can clinch at least a share of the title with a win against the No. 13 Orange (24-5). That would give UConn an unprecedented nine regular season titles.

Syracuse takes its 24-5 mark to Connecticut to rumble with the 20-6 Huskies. Oddsmakers like the Huskies in this one, opening the line at 5.5 in favor of Connecticut. They are 20-6 this season, while the Orangemen are 24-5. Jim Boeheim's troops hosted Providence last game and came away with a 91-66 win. Oddsmakers had them as 9 point favorites in that one. Jim Calhoun's team was busy last game winning against Georgetown 83-64 as 12 point favorites.

Some trends to consider before you place your bet:
Syracuse are 2-9-0 ATS in their last 11 games
Syracuse are 1-4-0 ATS in their last 5 games against Connecticut
Syracuse are 1-4-0 ATS in their last 5 away games against Connecticut
Syracuse are 10-5-0 OU in their last 15 games
Connecticut are 5-0-0 ATS in their last 5 games
Connecticut are 4-1-0 OU in their last 5 games
Connecticut are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 home games
Connecticut are 4-1-0 ATS in their last 5 games against Syracuse

DUI OF THE DAY - DUI charges for cop in fatal crash

Doesn't it seem like every second day here in our Daily DUI spot that its a law enforcement officer that's making the news?? Here we go with another.

A Chicago Police officer was charged with drunken driving Thursday for his involvement in last month's car crash that killed two southwest suburban teenagers. Jason Casper was previously charged with two counts of reckless homicide for the Feb. 12 accident that killed 17-year-old Mohammed Shuaibi of Tinley Park and Ahmad Shaban, 16, of Orland Park. The Calumet District police officer, who is free on a $500,000 bond, was off duty at the time of the incident.

Eight additional counts of aggravated DUI charges were added to Casper's indictment, announced at his court appearance in Bridgeview, Cook County state's attorney spokeswoman Marcy Jensen said. SunTimes

More Great Poker Tips For Newbie Poker Players

Texas Holdem has quickly become the most popular casino poker game. It is currently the game you will see televised in such events as the World Series of Poker and The World Poker Tour. Though Holdem looks and plays very simply, many experts agree that it is the most complex of poker games. Due to its complexity, the game can be kind or harsh to beginners and grizzled old warriors alike. The action is fast an furious, with more players, bets, raises and re-raises than many other typical poker games. Winners win big, losers lose big. These factors are the essence of what makes Texas Holdem so enjoyable, and therefore the King at the Casino.

Over the next few days the following is intended to be a basic introduction to and strategy for playing Texas Holdem online. For more in depth articles on this topic, check out our other articles in the Archives section, or visit our sister site, wageronfootball.com.

This list is set up for the aggressive player. Though its a good list for any player, some more conservatives might have a tighter list. Please note the differences between "suited" and "off-suit". They are off-suit as default unless otherwise noted.

Top Cards:
Ace-Ace (pair of aces)
King-King
Ace-King suited
Queen-Queen
Jack-Jack

When you're dealt Aces, Kings, or AK suited, you can and should raise and even re-raise before the flop, no matter your position. A pair of queens or jacks you have to be a bit more careful with, but the chances are still huge that you are top hand before the flop. Raise and drive out the draw hands, if there are no raises in front of you.

Strong Cards:
AQ, AJ, A10 (all suited)
AK (off suit or unsuited)
KQ suited
Pair of 10's
KJ, QJ, J10 all suited
AQ, AJ
Pair of 9's
KQ
K10 suited, Q10 suited

Why are these strong? If you notice, all have strong flush or straight draw chances, as well as a high face card. The pairs of 10's or 9's have to be included simply because of the rarity of being dealt a pocket pair, and these being on the high end.

With strong cards, look to raise in middle or late position, only if noone has raised before you. If you raise in middle position and someone in late position re-raises, be careful. If they're a strong player they probably have you beat in card strength unless theyre bluffing to try and take the ante's.

Decent Pocket Cards:
Pair of 8's
Jack-9, 10-9 both suited
Pair of 7's
9-8, 8-7 both suited
Ace and any other suited card
KJ, QJ, J10

Dont bother raising with these cards unless everyone in front of you has folded. Also be careful playing these in middle position. Honestly, you probably want to see the flop as cheaply as possible. These cards can turn into monster hands though, because of their deceptive value. If you have a reputation as a strong player, other players wont be expecting you to make a straight with a 9-8. Another reason to at least play these cards sometimes is to keep yourself from getting a reputation as a "Rock". If you only play nut cards and everytime you raise, everyone else folds, you're missing out on some big bucks.

Barely Playable Pocket Cards
Any pair, 6's and under
Connected suited cards, not shown above (ie. 4-5 suited)
A10, K10, Q10
K9, Q9, both suited

These cards have to have serious help from the board to win. If you can get to the flop cheap it can be worth it though, as these are draw hands to flushes and straights, and you may hit trips with your low pair. These cards can make good bluff hands when you're "on the button," and everyone in front of you has either folded or called the blinds, because they at least hold some potential for a good hand...so its not a complete bluff. But be warned. These are "play and pray" cards. In low limit games they might be worth it. But if you play these cards every time, you'll see your chip stack sink fast.

All other cards not mentioned above are complete trash. Fold 'em.

Feel free to print this list and by all means make amendments or trash it and make your own. Keep in mind, card strength is relative and depends on so many other factors. What might be great pocket cards in a tight game, may lose some value in a loose game where 3 people hold on to their trash, hoping for a miracle board, no matter how many times you raise them. Other factors include your position, your total chips vs. your opponents, and the limits of the game.

Preseason MLB Is Set To Start

They’re back. They say they’re healthy. The list of players who, for various reasons, missed out on all the guts and glory that was the 2004 World Series, is long and distinguished. Among the most prominent are shortstop Nomar Garciaparra of the Cubs, White Sox slugger Frank Thomas, prized Diamondbacks acquisition Troy Glaus, Reds center fielder Ken Griffey, Jr., Mariners bopper Richie Sexson, Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay, Red Sox right-hander Wade Miller, Diamondbacks left fielder Luis Gonzalez, Yankees first baseman-DH Jason Giambi and Indians third baseman Aaron Boone. For Garciaparra, a two-time batting champ and five-time All-Star, last season was bad before it even started.

The pitchers and catchers reported to Florida and Arizona last week and that means we are only a month away from America’s Pastime-Baseball. Randy Johnson for the Yankees has come up lame with “calf tightness “and will miss his first start in pinstripes. Atlanta’s Tim Hudson has signed a $47 million dollar extension, including a $10 million signing bonus. Let's see how he does this season.

Eva Longoria

FHM - Given the theme of Eva’s new show, it seemed only appropriate that the 29-year-old’s FHM photo shoot involved doing domestic work in her delicates. “It wasn’t a new experience—that’s standard operating procedure in my household,” she says. “Who doesn’t do housework in their underwear?”
