Spring Break
They'll start flocking into town today, tens of thousands of college students from the Northeast and the central part of the United States.

The city has prepared for the annual onslaught of sun-worshiping, beer-chugging college kids attempting to shrug off the pressures of academia by boosting the police presence along Atlantic Avenue and broadening a year-old campaign to encourage respect. Meanwhile, tourism promoters are expecting a fairly large crowd, similar to those of the past couple of years.

"It's going to be a busy week," said Scott Edwards, sales director of the Daytona Beach Welcome Center and chairman of the Spring Break Marketing Committee. "All the hotels in the center of town are booked solid."

Edwards, whose company buys blocks of hotel rooms for Spring Breakers, as well as other visitors,

said at least 70 percent of the 26 inns he works with are filled.
"We even have some kids going to hotels in Daytona Beach Shores because everything on the beach here is sold out," Edwards said.

Harrington wins on the PGA tour

Harrington wins on the PGA tour

Poker world champion Dan Harrington and Detroit Lions quarterback Joey Harrington both have something in common today. They're both related to the newest PGA tour champion Padraig Harrington from Ireland.

The short putt went to the right in the fading light -- just the break Harrington needed. He won the Honda Classic for his first PGA Tour title when Vijay Singh missed a 2 1/2-foot putt to bogey the second playoff hole. "I thought it was a gimme," Harrington said. "I shouldn't have missed," Singh said.

If Harrington was lucky, he was also due -- he has been a runner-up 26 times in worldwide events. And he earned the victory Sunday by shooting a 9-under-par 63 in the final round to erase a seven-shot deficit. Next week's Golf Betting lines - Click here.

Steroids In The NFL? - Nah just homeopathic medicine
So how is this going to play out? First baseball and now those 350lb guys that can run down a porsche are in trouble? Who could have seen this coming this week as Investigators probing an alternative medicine doctor want to speak to at least nine current or former members of the Carolina Panthers about possible illegal steroid prescriptions, a Columbia newspaper reported.

Dr. James Shortt, a West Columbia physician, is under investigation for allegedly prescribing steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs, The State said in Sunday editions. The newspaper based its story on court records and sources speaking on condition of anonymity. Federal agents subpoenaed the Panthers for the addresses and contact information of several players as part of the probe. "We've known about the investigation into Dr. Shortt for a short period of time and we are still trying to retrieve enough information to comment on it," Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said Sunday. "We certainly are not aware of any of our players testing positive for steroids."

I haven't looked but you can probably read all about it here at

March Madness Sunday Update - If the process of seeding the top teams is any indication, this could be one big buzzer-beater of an NCAA basketball tournament. As expected, Illinois, once-beaten and top-ranked in the polls, was given the No. 1 overall seed. The rest wasn't so cut and dried: Less than an hour before announcing the brackets on American television, the 10 committee members were still debating in an Indianapolis hotel suite. Two of the four No. 1 seeds were still undecided. It wasn't until the last two conference tournament games ended, about 45 minutes before the selections went public, that the committee finally gave the top seeds to the Illini, North Carolina, Duke and Washington - the surprise of the group.

Washington and Duke got what they deserved. Syracuse and Wake Forest did not. Syracuse was rewarded for its Big East Tournament championship by being given a No. 4 seed -- two rungs below second-seeded Connecticut. While the Huskies finished two games ahead of Syracuse and swept the Orange in the regular season, Syracuse beat UConn in the Big East semifinals. Faced with a similar situation in the ACC, the selection committee went in another direction. Although Wake Forest (26-5) finished two games ahead of Duke -- the two split in the regular season and didn't play in the ACC Tournament -- the Blue Devils (25-5) received the No. 1 seed and the advantageous pod in Charlotte, N.C. And what did Wake Forest get? Wake Forest got the shaft.

Who will emerge from the 65-team bracket? Amid all the unpredictability of March Madness, it's refreshing to know there's at least one certainty: Top-seeded teams will win their opening games against No. 16 seeds. They're a perfect 80-0 in the 64-team era. Of course, the inviolable laws of the tourney are meant to be broken. Sooner or later, a one seed is going to lose in the first round – but people in their right minds should never predict it. Odds are less than even that a No. 2 seed will make it to the championship game. If one does get there, the last thing it wants is to face a top seed. While 84 percent of No. 3 seeds win their first-round games (67-13), they're three times more prone to upsets than second seeds. Fourth-seeded teams perform nearly as well as No. 3 seeds in the first round, winning 80 percent of their games (64-16). In first-round games, No. 5 seeds perform more like No. 6 seeds than No. 4 seeds. Their record (54-26) is actually two games worse than that of sixth-seeded teams (56-24). So what does all this analysis tell you? Exactly the same thing it tells me, tune in starting this week and catch all the action. Enjoy the march madness everyone.

Shooting Stars WPT Poker Tournament

Event: No-Limit Hold'em Championship
Buy-in: $10,000
Number of Entries: 440
Total Prize Pool: $4,070,000

There were cheers for Danny Nguyen at both of San Jose's card clubs this weekend, after the local poker dealer and hometown hero won the $1 million prize in the World Poker Tour's Shooting Star Tournament at the Bay 101 Casino. More than 2,000 players and spectators filled the cavernous Bay 101 club with cheers when Nguyen won the final hand with a pair of threes shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, said Samuel Quinto, Bay 101 tournament director. The hand was good enough to beat Canadian Jay Martens in the final round of the five-day tournament, which drew Hollywood celebrities such as James Woods and Tobey Maguire, as well as poker stars like Greg ``Fossilman'' Raymer and Chris ``Jesus'' Ferguson. Across town, when his victory was announced on the floor at Garden City, players and club employees gave another round of applause for the easygoing Nguyen, Castro said. They did it again when the day shift manager made a similar announcement Saturday.

Daily DUI - Finally A Hockey Player Makes Our DUI of The Day

Now we all know how much hockey players love to party the same or as much as any pro athlete, I think they just do a better job of not getting caught, as most pro hockey players are pretty smart guys. Well not this time for Jeff O'neill. The Carolina Hurricanes forward was charged with drunken driving and disorderly conduct on Saturday.

The 29-year-old O'Neill was arrested just after 1 a.m. near his home in Raleigh. He was also charged with failing to stop for a stop sign and transporting an open container of alcohol. The arresting officer saw O'Neill urinate in the parking lot of a shopping centre and then drive past a stop sign without stopping. The officer detected a "strong odour of alcohol" when he stopped O'Neill, according to court papers.

The Richmond Hill, Ontario, native refused a chemical analysis test of his blood-alcohol level, according to an affidavit.

Syracuse Wins Big East

Jim Boheim certainly knows when his team should peak doesn't he? The future college hall of fame coach won his first big east title in a while behind the strong play of senior Hakim Warrick who had 20 points and 13 rebounds - his third double-double in three games - and Syracuse (27-6) won the conference tournament for the first time since 1992 with a victory over West Virginia (21-10) on Saturday. The third-seeded Orange won their fourth Big East Tournament title in their 12th championship game appearance. Warrick, the conference Player of the Year, was selected the tournament MVP. The only other player to have three double-doubles in one tournament was Craig Smith of Boston College last year.  Get Your NCAA March Madness Lines Here.

The 16th-ranked Orange, which lost three of four games in mid-February, is showing the trappings of a team that can make a deep run in the N.C.A.A. tournament.
