Nascar Update

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is 236 points behind. Matt Kenseth is 241 back. Former champion Bobby Labonte? He's 37th in the standings, 312 points in arrears, just ahead of last year's rookie phenom, Kasey Kahne (-316). Think it's too early to panic? Think again. Atlanta's up next, and all four come in with high expectations after previous success at the track.

Earnhardt Jr. is the defending race champion. Kenseth has four top 10s in his past six visits. Labonte owns six victories at the track, most among active drivers. Kahne finished in the top five in both his trips last season. None of them can afford anything short of a top 10 -- and that's being generous -- in Atlanta, because if they can't perform well at a track that has been kind to them in the past, it won't bode well for turning their seasons around.

Who's Hot
#1 Kurt Busch
In his last 13 starts, the defending Nextel Cup champ has racked up a dozen top-10 finishes and one win. How hot is he? He lost the points lead to Jimmie Johnson at Las Vegas, then had it handed back to him on Tuesday when Johnson was penalized.

#2 Jimmie Johnson
Yeah, yeah, I know, he just got caught cheating and lost the points lead because of it. Big deal. He still got to keep the win, which means he has visited Victory Lane five times in the last nine races. His points per race average over that stretch? A massive 173.3.

Who's Not Hot
# 1 Kasey Kahne
An average finish of 33rd has him sitting 38th in points. The good news — he finished 3rd and 5th at Atlanta last year.

#2 Cheaters
This just in... NASCAR is pretty serious about this whole "don't cheat" deal this season. Tuesday alone, the league handed down fines totaling $92,000, took away 75 car and owner points, then added an exclamation point of eight races worth of suspensions.

Daily DUI - Man With 'TIPSY' Plate Faces DUI Charges

This is just great isn't it? They make them pretty smart up in Moorehead Minnesota. Having a vanity plate that reads "TIPSY" may not be such a great idea after all. Josiah Johnson, 23, said his license plate might have tipped off the Clay County sheriff's deputy who pulled him over Friday after he left Coach's Sports Pub in Moorhead. Now he faces third-degree drunken driving charges after his blood-alcohol level allegedly registered twice the legal limit.

Johnson said he bought the personalized license plate for his Jeep to describe the way it rode — then kept it as a joke when he got a Chevy Silverado because he likes to party. "It doesn't mean I drink and drive," he said. "It just means I have a good time." Johnson, who was slated to appear in court March 22, said he'll never drink and drive again. "I feel really stupid," he said.

Probation, community service for trio at Pistons Fight Night

Hey fans I have some advice for you, don't drink so much at the games, and don't think you're above the law. If you do this you won't be one of the three men that were sentenced to probation and community service Wednesday for their part in a brawl between the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons.

Alvin Shackelford Jr. and Charlie Haddad had pleaded no contest to violating a local ordinance against entering a performance space. Jeremy Handley pleaded guilty to violating a local ordinance against throwing objects at a sporting event. District Judge Lisa Asadoorian sentenced Shackelford to a year of probation and 150 hours of community service. Shackelford was hit by Pacers forward Ron Artest after approaching the player on the court during the melee at The Palace of Auburn Hills Nov. 19. Haddad, who authorities say was punched by two Indiana players, received a sentence of two years of probation and 100 hours of community service, plus an additional 10 weekends of community service. Handley was sentenced to a year of probation and 75 hours of community service. Handley, the 31-year-old resident of Macomb County's Chesterfield Township, in January turned himself in after seeing his face on television as someone for whom police were looking. Asadoorian said Handley threw an empty cup during the brawl.

Four other fans and five Indiana players are charged with assault and battery in the fight. Another fan, Bryant Jackson, has been ordered to stand trial on a charge of felony assault for throwing a chair. ABCLocal.com

MLB Steroid Hearings

MLB Testifies

Major League Baseball must confront the role of steroids in its past, the chairman of a House panel holding a hearing on drugs in the sport said Thursday. "Baseball can not simply turn its back on recent history, pronounce that the new testing policy will solve everything, and move on," Representative Tom Davis (R-Va.), said in a prepared opening statement. "You can't look forward without looking back."

Current or former players Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling were scheduled to appear, while two-time AL MVP Frank Thomas was given permission to testify via video connection. That group includes three of the top 10 home run hitters in major league history: McGwire ranks sixth with 583, Sosa is seventh, Palmeiro 10th. And McGwire and Sosa were widely credited with boosting baseball's popularity in 1998 when they engaged in a head-to-head chase to break Roger Maris' season record of 61 homers. McGwire finished with 70, Sosa with 66. One subpoenaed player was excused from testifying at all, New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, who reportedly told a grand jury investigating a steroid-distribution ring in 2003 that he used steroids.

Incident costs NBA's Augmon one game

MagicOrlando Magic reserve forward Stacey Augmon has been suspended for one game after a locker room incident in which he threatened reporters and sprayed them with "hand lotion." According to reports, Augmon allegedly took exception to a question posed to guard Steve Francis following Sunday's game and provided his own expletive-filled responses to it. Augmon became enraged and threw a bottle of body lotion across the locker room hitting three reporters. USAToday.com

2005 NFL preseason schedule

I still can't believe that the powers that be have not come together and come up with a way to make the NFL exhibition season a bit shorter. Even if they made it shorter by 1 week I guarantee you we'd see a lot less injuries in the NFL, and instead of watching the stars on the sidelines, we'd get to see them play.

Come on NFL get your act together. Anyways I digress, here is the 2005/2006 NFL preaseason schedule as released by the NFL yesterday.
