Online bettors furiously ante up for March Madness

A recently published article on USA Today talks about the popularity of betting on March Madness, and Bodog.com was one of their sources. Here's an excerpt from that article (written by Jon Swartz and Michelle Kessler):

It's never been easier, or more acceptable, to bet on sports over the Internet. There are 1,000 sports-betting sites. Advances in software, wireless and electronic-payment technology let millions of Americans plunk money down anytime and anywhere — even in the middle of a game.

"Consumers are more comfortable betting because they don't feel they're being ripped off. The sky hasn't fallen," says Calvin Ayre, Founder & CEO of Bodog.com Sports Casino Poker.

Hundreds of Internet sports-betting sites are expected to rake in $1 billion to $1.3 billion in wagers during March Madness, several market researchers say — at least double this year's Super Bowl. Sixty-four men's basketball teams are in the tournament, which tipped off Thursday and concludes April 4.

Paula Abdul Hit & Run

Paula AbdulFormer Laker girl, former Singer, and current American Karaoke judge Paula Abdul is not a good driver. Nor is she a very good citizen apparently.

Prosecutors in Los Angeles are considering whether or not to file criminal charges against Abdul for an alleged hit and run accident on the 101 freeway last December. According to reports, she clipped another car while changing lanes and did not stop to exchange information with the other driver. The other driver took her picture with a camera phone and the vehicle was traced back to the karaoke judge. JimRome Shameless Plug<--- Our Favorite Radio Guy

That’s not good. Look, just because you get to sit there with that obnoxious euro and tell people that they suck at karaoke, doesn’t mean that you get to go around town plowing into people in your rig. Who do you think you are, Halle Berry? Simon would have stopped. Then again, he would have gotten out of the car and started carving up the driver for being stupid and fat and a terrible singer. But he would have stopped. Randy would have stopped and said, ‘Sorry dawg.’ But not you. Look, I am sure you had some where important you needed to be, but you need to stop when you slam into someone on the freeway. It isn’t optional. You hit another car, then you trade information, then you leave. That’s it. If the other person feels that there hasn’t been any damage, then you can just drive away. But you don’t get to make that call. Come on Paula. You’re better than that.

Man arrested for ninth lifetime DUI

Is it just me or do you have to be pretty darn stupid to pull this one off 9x?

A Mt. Orab, Ohio, man has been arrested on his ninth offense lifetime of driving under the influence of alcohol, but the first in the last six years. Daniel P. Byrd, 51, was charged with driving under the influence and failing to drive in a marked lane Thursday night on U.S. 52 near Ohio 141 in Upper Township. The charges are misdemeanors. Byrd was released on bond from the Lawrence County Jail, according to a deputy jailer. He is scheduled to appear in Ironton Municipal Court at 1:30 p.m. Monday. Absolutly ridiculous. Get the point there man OK!!!???

PGA Tour - Bay Hill Invitational - Golf Sportsbook

Charles Howell III and Calgary's Stephen Ames got the best of both worlds Friday in the Bay Hill Invitational. They were among only 30 players to complete the second round, and they were atop the leaderboard. On a day that felt like a marathon to some and a vacation to others, Howell ended his long day with another short birdie putt that gave him rounds of 71-68, giving him a share of the early lead. Ames also played 36 holes and posted the same scores. He birdied five of six holes in one stretch, then finished with a five-foot par to join Howell at 5-under 139.

Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., was unable to start his second round as play was suspended due to darkness. He shot a 1-under 71 in his first round. Vijay Singh, who can return to No. 1 in the world with a victory this week, struck the ball flawlessly but couldn't make a putt. He found a solution on the eighth hole by not having to putt - the Fijian holed out from 152 yards with a nine-iron and wound up with rounds of 72 and 68, leaving him one shot behind. "I just didn't make any putts all day," Singh said. Boston.com

NCAA Betting Game Of The Day - Bet Now
Washington
Pacific

Pacific (25-2) at Washington (24-5) - Bet Now
Saturday, March 19, 2005 3:20 PM EDT
Washington are 7 point favorites. The total for this game has been set at 153.

The Pacific Tigers go from cats to dogs Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers took down the Pittsburgh Panthers in the first round, but their journey through the Tourney gets tougher with the No. 1 seed Washington Huskies standing in their way. Oddsmakers like the Huskies in this one, opening the line at 7 in favor of Washington. They are 28-5 this season, while the Tigers are 27-3. Last time out, against Pittsburgh, the Tigers as underdogs defeated the Panthers 79-71. The Huskies come off an 88-77 win against the Grizzlies, a game where they were a 21 point favorite. This game is likely to come down to the Huskies's execution on offence. They rank 2nd in the league in scoring and look to sustain their 86.4 points per game average against the Tigers's #41-rated defensiv

Some trends to consider:
Pacific are 2-4-0 OU in their last 6 games
Pacific are 6-2-0 OU in their last 8 away
Washington are 7-3-0 OU in their last 10 games
Washington are 1-4-0 ATS in their last 5 games

Pacific most recently...
After a win are 10-0
After playing UC Riverside are 5-1
When playing on Saturday are 8-2
Washington most recently...
After a loss are 7-3
After playing Stanford are 3-5
When playing on Saturday are 7-3

Chances of being dealt in the original 5 cards

Royal Flush 1 in 650,000
Straight Flush 1 in 72,200
Four of a Kind 1 in 4,200
Full House 1 in 700
Flush 1 in 510
Straight 1 in 250
Three of a Kind 1 in 48
Two Pair 1 in 21
One Pair 1 in 2.4
No Pair 1 in 2

Based on these chances of receiving an opening hand, there are a few things you can immediately conclude:

* the more players at the table, the greater the chance that one or more players has a Pair, for example. In other words...
* the more players at the table, the lower the relative value of the lesser ranked hands.
* if you haven't got a Pair or better, or four cards to a Flush or Straight, Fold immediately.

Perhaps this last bit of advice needs some elaboration. What it comes down to is this: if you hold nothing in the opener your chances of improving and beating the other players are too slim. Of course this means that you'll fold most of your opening hands. Welcome to Draw Poker.
