Super Bowl in New York
NewYork - SuperBowlThe NFL awarded the Super Bowl to New York in 2010. Of course, that's contingent on the construction of a new retractable roof stadium on the West Side of Manhattan. NFL owners made it official at the conclusion of the annual meetings on Wednesday, approving the New York Jets' bid to host the game.

"Today is a landmark day, and the 2010 Super Bowl in the New York Sports and Convention Center will be a historic event," Jets owner Woody Johnson said. "We're thrilled about this announcement. I want to thank the NFL membership for granting the New York Jets and the city and state of New York to showcase this week-long, mega-event in the greatest city in the world." On Monday, the Jets raised their bid for the rights to build on the land on the West Side of Manhattan to $720 million. But whether a stadium can be built there remains a major question since numerous political groups oppose it. The Dolan family, which owns Madison Square Garden, has been involved in a bitter fight to block construction of the stadium. The city hopes the stadium will help it land the 2012 Summer Olympics. New York is bidding against Paris, London, Madrid and Moscow.

Hensby explains his early departure
Mark Hensby had a good reason for not playing the 18th hole last week at Bay Hill after hitting his tee shot out-of-bounds. He was out of balls. Hensby said his caddie didn't replenish the supply when they resumed the first round Friday morning, with 11 holes still to play. He prefers to use a new ball every third hole, and his caddie usually gives the old ones to kids in the gallery. ``He saw three or four balls in the bag and said, 'That's fine. We've only got 11 holes to play,''' Hensby said. ``I made double bogey on No. 9, so I gave that one away. I hit in the water on 11. He must have given one away somewhere else.''

When they arrived on the par-3 17th, the caddie told him there was only one ball left. His tee shot on the 18th caromed off a cart path and went over the fence.

NFL Rule Changes
NFL owners are expected to vote later today on numerous rule changes proposed by the competition committee. Extending replay challenges to cover fumbles on plays already whistled by officials because the ball carrier was down on contact and banning "horse-collar tackles" are the proposals that have the best chance of receiving approval. It will take 24 votes from the 32 teams to agree on any rules changes. Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher and Atlanta Falcons general manager Rich McKay head the competition committee.

A proposal from the committee would permit the defense to recover the ball if replays showed a fumble occurred before the runner was down by contact, even if officials blow a whistle, which normally ends the play.Under the rule proposed for a one-year trial period, the recovery would have to be immediate and clearly evident on replay, and the defense would not be permitted to advance the ball. Pay Up Romo

A jury ordered Bill Romanowski to pay former Oakland Raiders teammate Marcus Williams $340,000 in damages on Tuesday for smashing the tight end's face with a punch during a practice drill in 2003. Williams had been seeking millions of dollars in damages for the Aug. 24, 2003, attack, saying it broke his left eye socket, shortened his memory, gave him double vision and depression, and ended his career after less than two seasons. "We are very pleased with the verdict because it establishes that there are limits to the violence in football," said Williams' attorney, James Brosnahan.
