Who Would Try To Rob This Guy?
Fossilman Two men suspected of trying to rob World Series of Poker champion Greg Raymer in Las Vegas last year were arrested Sunday at a gun show at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, authorities said.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department received an anonymous tip Sunday afternoon that Kevin R. Joy, 35, and Deem Cassim, 31, were selling toy helicopters at the show.

The pair are accused of trying to rob Raymer as he returned to his room after playing a cash game of poker at the Bellagio Hotel on Dec. 20.

Raymer, a soft-spoken 40-year-old from Stonington, Conn. who weighs more than 300 pounds, fought off the two men as they tried to shove him into his room, not giving up his money even after one of them pulled a gun. The two men fled and were later identified on security video by Las Vegas police. When approached by authorities, both men gave false names and claimed to have no identification, but gave up without a struggle, sherriff's Corporal Dan Murtaugh said. They were booked on outstanding felony warrants and were awaiting extradition to Las Vegas.

NBA Monday Recap

Juan Dixon was so upset with his performance after Game 3 that he approached his coach in the parking garage and appealed for a vote of confidence. The rest of the Washington Wizards also were upset -- with the perception they couldn't play defense. Combine those two, and you get a career-high 35 points from Dixon and a team that took control in the opening minutes by not allowing the Chicago Bulls anywhere near the rim. The Wizards jumped to a 17-3 lead, rattling their opponents early and often in a 106-99 victory Monday that evened their first-round playoff series 2-2.

With a chance to finally pull ahead in their first-round playoff series, the Dallas Mavericks refused to let anything stop them. Not even the boundaries of the court. The Mavs hustled at both ends of the floor to protect a shrinking lead in the fourth quarter of a 103-100 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday night, and in one key instance they got away with Michael Finley making a play from beyond the baseline. Replays showed that Finley clearly had both feet out of bounds when he jarred a rebound from Houston's Jon Barry with just under a minute left. Officials didn't see that -- but they did see Barry foul Jerry Stackhouse after he grabbed the loose ball. He made both free throws to help Dallas pad a lead that wasn't secured until Tracy McGrady missed a long jumper at the buzzer.

After fouling out midway through overtime, Tim Duncan called his teammates over for a huddle, tugged on their jerseys and told them to finish what he started. They did. Duncan had his best game of the series and Tony Parker scored 11 of his 29 points in overtime, helping the San Antonio Spurs move within a game of clinching the series with a 126-115 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.

Prince Naseem Hamed
Ouch BOXING champ Prince Naseem Hamed was today bailed after being arrested over a 209mph car crash.

The smash happened during a “crazy overtaking bid” — leaving a man seriously injured.

Naz, 31, who is said to have fled the smash scene, was quizzed by cops along with two 26-year-old men, who have also been released on bail.

Ripped apart ... Naz's $200,000 Mercedes is reduced to a heap of scrap metal after yesterday's crash

A police spokesman said they were being questioned about leaving an accident and attempting to pervert justice, adding: “There’s an ongoing investigation into the true identity of the driver.” Naz and the two men, one of whom is thought to be his brother, were just a little nicked up at the star’s $2.4 million dollar home a stone’s throw from the crash.

Rome's Sports Rant Of The Day - Moron Of The Day
Oklahoma baseball Head Coach Larry Cochell is a well respected name in the game of college baseball. He won the NCAA Championship with Oklahoma in 1994, and Oklahoma is one of the marquee programs in the country. Or I guess I should say he ‘was’ one of the marquee names in the business. Considering he no longer works there, I guess that would be the proper tense. Cochell resigned his position as Head Coach of the Sooners yesterday, a job he held since 1991.

So what could happen to make a guy quit his job in the middle of the season? Well, how about dropping the n-word during an interview, twice. Cochell was speaking with ESPN's play-by-play man Gary Thorne before the Sooners game against Wichita State when he called over to outfielder Joe Dunigan Jr, who is African American. After the young man returned to the field, Cochell turned to Throne and said, “There’s no n-bomb in him.” Only he didn’t say "n-bomb". ESPN's Throne went with the fully leaded version. Thorne later was talking with ESPN analyst Kyle Peterson, and Peterson told Thorne that he also used the word when talking to him. So clearly this is a word that the guy wasn’t too shy about throwing around. The network notified the University of the remarks and on Friday they gave the team’s duties to an Assistant Coach while they reviewed the matter. Coach Cochell quite yesterday and said, “As I have said in a public statement, i deeply regret that I carelessly used language that is clearly contrary to the basic values of the University. Those words also created an impression contrary to my own personal values and my respect for all people.”

Hold on a second. Contrary to your own personal values? You said it twice to TV guys. That’s a pretty heavily charged word. That’s not something you throw out there unless you use it pretty freely, I would imagine. That’s not a slip of the tongue. That’s a racist statement. Period! Of course the guy had to quit. It is 2005, not 1925. That word is not acceptable under any circumstances. He said it while having a casual conversation with a TV play-by-play man. Who knows what he says when he's behind closed doors. He has to go. You don’t get a do-over on something like that period. This is a guy that is supposed to help shape young men and this is not the sort of thing that you want him teaching at a “university”.

Kentucky Derby News - Consolidator is out of this weeks Kentucky Derby - The defection of Consolidator drops the number of likely Kentucky Derby entrants to 20, exactly the race's field-size limit. Late Triple Crown supplement Greeley's Galaxy, who by rule can only draw into the Derby field if there are fewer than 20 nominees entered, appears for now to have secured a spot in the Derby starting gate.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who won six races the first two days of the 2005 Churchill Downs Spring Meeting, was to have ridden Consolidator. Trainer Nick Zito quickly named Bejarano to pilot Arkansas Derby third-place finisher Andromeda's Hero upon learning the news. Lukas was unavailable for comment as of noon Monday. Churchill Downs will provide an update as soon as it is available.

The Wachovia Championship
Taking into account present trends, present company and recent history, this week’s $6 million Wachovia Championship should be a shootout.

The third-year PGA TOUR event returns to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., and features nine of the top 11 players in the Official World Golf Ranking. That list includes No. 1 Tiger Woods, who is making his first start since his fourth victory in the Masters Tournament.

Joey Sindelar defeated Arron Oberholser in a playoff to claim last year’s title, and there’s no reason to believe the tournament won’t be decided at the wire again – especially when you consider how hard it’s been for a player, regardless of his ranking, to separate himself from the field of late. Woods' caddie crashes in car race
Is this guy nuts or what? Tiger Woods' New Zealand-born caddie Steve Williams walked away uninjured from his second speedway crash this year, New Zealand television reported Tuesday.

TV3 showed footage of Williams' limited saloon car flipping and rolling four times during a dirt-track race in New Zealand's central North Island on Saturday.Williams was examined by trackside paramedics but did not need further medical treatment.

In late January, Williams had surgery on his left hand after gashing it to the bone when the same style of car flipped and hit a safety wall on the last lap of a dirt-track race, also in New Zealand. I'd call this flirting with disaster.

The "new and improved" Yankees?
Get ready for the new and improved Yankees. Hideki Matsui is moving to center field for an ailing Bernie Williams. Tony Womack is headed to left, and Robinson Cano is coming up from the minors to play second base every day. Plus, Randy Johnson could wind up on the disabled list because of a stiff groin, putting another young pitcher in the rotation. Joe Torre began a major overhaul by announcing a series of moves that will change the look of the lineup, as well as the rotation.

"We felt we needed a little energy," Torre said.
