The Kentucky Derby Preview #6

Bet On Horses

Check back every day right here for more updates and information on the The Kentucky Derby - May 7th - at 6pm Eastern.

Derby Trophy

Since the 50th running of the Kentucky Derby in 1924, Churchill Downs has annually presented a gold trophy to the winning owner of the famed "Run for the Roses."
Kentucky Derby

History is unclear if a trophy was presented in 1875 to the winner of the first Kentucky Derby, and trophy presentations were sporadically made in following years. Finally, in 1924, legendary Churchill Downs President Matt Winn commissioned that a standard design be developed for the "Golden Anniversary" of the Derby.

Outside of the jeweled embellishments that were added to note special Derby anniversaries in 1949 (75th), 1974 (100th), and 1999 (125th), only one change has been made to the original design. For the 125th Kentucky Derby in 1999, Churchill Downs officials decided to defer to racing lore and change the direction of the decorative horseshoe displayed on the 14-karat gold trophy. The horseshoe, fashioned from 18-karat gold, had pointed downward on each of the trophies since 1924. To commemorate Derby 125 the change was made and the horseshoe was turned 180 degrees so that its ends pointed up. The trophy now annually incorporates the horseshoe with the ends pointing up. Racing superstition decrees that if the horseshoe is turned down all the luck will run out.

Since 1975 the trophy has been created by New England Sterling located in North Attleboro, MA. The trophy, which is topped by an 18-karat gold horse and rider, includes horseshoe shaped handles, is 22 inches tall and weighs 56 ounces, excluding its jade base. The entire trophy is handcrafted with the exception of the horse and rider that are both cast from a mold. To complete the trophy by April, craftsmen begin the process during the fall of the previous year and literally work hundreds of hours. The trophy is believed to be the only solid gold trophy that is annually awarded the winner of a major American sporting event.

Hopkins set to face Taylor

Hopkins is taking his July 16 fight against Taylor, 26, seriously. The bout, which was officially announced Tuesday after months of negotiations, will mark the 21st defence of his title and is being hyped with a slogan, NeXt In Line.

''He's next, next in a line of 20,'' Hopkins said. ''He's 21.'' The fight will be held at the MGM Grand hotel-casino in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live by HBO pay-per-view.

The Executioner

Hopkins (46-2-1, 32 KOs) has said he plans to retire when he turns 41 in January, and he plans to do it while still being the undisputed champion. Taylor (23-0, 17 KOs), a member of the 2000 Olympic team considered to be the top contender among middleweight challengers, realizes this might be his shot at beating the fighter that has been at the top of the division for more than a decade.

BAR-Honda gets two race ban - Formula 1 Update
Bar Honda BAR-Honda's chances for a Formula One championship in 2005 were dealt a serious blow on Thursday after the FIA Court of Appeal disqualified the team from the San Marino Grand Prix and suspended them for the next two races. FIA, the governing body of motorsport, had asked for the team to be disqualified from the 2005 championship.

The ruling follows a hearing on Wednesday at which team officials were asked to explain why Jenson Button's car was found to be underweight during a post-race inspection.

NBA Roundup

Ouch!!! Sorry Bulls Fan! Gilbert Arenas drilled a jumper at the buzzer to lift the Washington Wizards to a 112-110 victory over the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of their first round series Wednesday night. Arenas was just 5-of-14 shooting for 16 points in the game, but he came through when it mattered, lifting up near the left elbow and getting off a tough jumper over Chicago's Kirk Hinrich and Tyson Chandler. "He timed it just right, like he normally does," said Wizards head coach Eddie Jordan, whose team now leads the best-of-seven series 3-2.

Tony Parker scored 21 points, Tim Duncan had 18 with 11 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs clinched their first round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets with a 99-89 victory in Game 5 on Wednesday night. The Spurs won four straight in this best-of-seven series after losing Game 1 at home. They advanced to face the Seattle SuperSonics in the Western Conference semifinals. Manu Ginobili also scored 18 points and Robert Horry added 17 for the Spurs, who gained control of the game with a 21-8 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters.

Barry Bonds had a third operation on his injured right knee, the San Francisco Giants slugger said on his website Wednesday.

Bonds underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday as doctors tried to clean out an infection, first draining fluids from his knee, according to a journal entry from Bonds posted on his website.

"The surgery went well. Dr. (Arthur) Ting cleaned out the infected area and they are now treating me with antibiotics," Bonds wrote. "I know you have many questions regarding me playing baseball but right now I have to spend the time focusing on getting healthy. I've been through ups and downs before and I will be back." Just look at the lengths some guys will go to avoid answering questions about steroids. My man, they could amputate that leg and people are still going to want to know. Could Barry's timing be any worse? Right when the drug scandal reaches a boiling point, Barry shuts it down and disappears. I’m not saying he’s not hurt but it’s awfully convenient isn’t it? He’d never say it, but you know Hank Aaron is the happiest guy in America right now. He’s sitting in Atlanta with a huge smile on his face knowing that his clean 755 is looking better and safer every day.
