COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME OF THE WEEK

Tennessee Volunteers at LSU Tigers
Tennessee LSU

Preview: The start of LSU's home schedule is always a big deal in football crazy Baton Rouge. An SEC rival and fellow Top 10 team being the opponent makes it that much bigger. That's not even the reason why this game is so important. In what is likely the most meaningful home opener in school history, the third-ranked Tigers try to do their part in boosting the morale of hurricane-ravaged Louisiana as they meet the No. 10 Volunteers on Saturday night. LSU looks to use home field advantage to get an important conference win against the Volunteers. The Tigers play into revenge Saturday, after handing Tennessee a 31-20 defeat in the last meeting back on December 8, 2001. The Tigers are favored, opening as 6.5-point chalk. They are 1-0 ATS this season while the Volunteers are 0-2 ATS. After after being held to 7 points in a loss against the Gators, Tennessee fans expect their offence to get on track at Tiger Stadium. If not, this could be another one for Tennessee's loss column. The Tigers come off a 35-31 win against the Sun Devils, a game where they were a 2-point favorite.

HEISMAN TROPHY TOP 5

Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush, USC's two-headed monster, are in a two-man race for this year's Heisman. While many want to inject Texas QB Vince Young into the running, USC's total dominance so far makes Young nothing more than a spectator at this point. As for Oklahoma sophomore Adrian Peterson, who last year became the first freshman to ever finish second in the Heisman balloting, his chances (like Elvis), have left the building!

1) MATT LEINART (USC) Last Week:1. Leinart's lucky he isn't coached by Jim Tressel or Phil Fulmer, as those 'geniuses' would probably be wondering if maybe John David Booty should be getting more time at the QB position.

2) REGGIE BUSH (USC) Last Week: 2. The first time Reggie touched the ball against Arkansas, he took it for another one of his patented "highlight reel" TD runs (76 yards).

3) VINCE YOUNG (Texas) Last Week: 3. Young, now 20-2 as a starter, had a 'quiet' game as Texas beat Rice 51-10, for the 38th time in the last 39 meetings.

4) LAURENCE MARONEY (Minnesota) Last Week: 6. The top-three players on this list are head-and-shoulders in front of any of the other so-called Heisman contenders.

5) CHRIS LEAK (Florida) Last Week: 5. For the first time in Leak's career, he failed to throw a TD pass in a game in which he was the starting QB, as Florida beat Tennessee Saturday night, 16-7.

Lou is Leaving

Lou Lou Piniella's tenure with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays apparently is coming to an end.

According to a report Wednesday on the web site of the Tampa Tribune, Piniella will not return to manage the Devil Rays in 2006.

A Tampa native, Piniella will accept a $2.2 million buyout after the season and be free to pursue other managerial openings, according to the report.

Both Piniella and the Devil Rays declined comment on the report. "In echoing the sentiments expressed by our manager Lou Piniella, we will have no comment on this matter until a more appropriate time, if that should present itself," the team said in a statement. Piniella signed a four-year, $13 million contract with the Devil Rays after his negotiating rights were traded by the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Randy Winn after the 2002 season. However, the 62-year-old Piniella has been outspoken about the lack of commitment from Devil Rays' ownership.

MY NHL - New NHL ad Campaign

My NHL.

my NHL

That's the catchy slogan as the embattled league announced its new advertising campaign at the Museum of Television and Radio yesterday, attempting to re-launch after a labour battle wiped out the 2003-04 season.

"When the season begins on Oct. 5, we will celebrate the return of hockey, and honour the values, tradition and emotion of the game we all love," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. "To salute those virtues, we have teamed with (ad agency) Conductor to create a marketing message that captures hockey's intensity, drama and power."

A series of TV commercials and print ads will be released next week. The TV spots will be packaged in a five-part story, the first of which depicts a hockey player preparing for a game with the backdrop of a mythical temple, like a Samurai warrior getting ready for battle.
